Senate Insurgents Claim First Round Victory in Ohio Budget Battle
In Columbus on April 30 insurgent leaders claimed a first round win in trimming 16,000,000 from 1937 38 state expenditures. A six member conference panel was formed to shape a bill acceptable to both Senate and House as administration forces had restored about 1,900,000 of the original cuts. The minority bill total ranged near 83,000,000 with restorations to 65,000,000 against the administration 89,000,000. The fight shifts to whether the House will accept a compromised bill or adjourn without passing any appropriation, prompting a possible special session before June 30. Senate supports reductions led by Harol Nichols and Horace Baggett, while Majority Leader Keith Lawrence backs the administration.
