Newcombe Arm Sore Dodgers Ace Faces Doubleheader Woes
Dodgers manager Burt Shotton said Don Newcombe has a very sore arm but he is not worried because reliever Dan Bankhead matched his pace. Bankhead earned his first major league win 5 to 3 over the Giants in the Polo Grounds, while Newcombe exited after a third inning with a 4-0 lead. Bankhead allowed six hits and one run after the second, and Brooklyn added four runs in the third, aided by Duke Snider's two run triple. Meanwhile Curt Simmons starred for Philadelphia in a 6-1 win over the Braves, with Eddie Sawyer predicting a future great. Reds beat Cubs 3-1 behind Herman Wehmeier’s two-hitter to halt Chicago’s streak, as Joe Adcock and Grady Hatton each had two hits. Ralph Kiner also fueled a 4-3 Pirates win over the Cardinals with a three-run eighth.
