James B. Thomas notes next June's Sault Ste Marie centennial will interest Elyrians as thousands of tons of iron ore pass the Soo locks yearly to Lorain area mills in Youngstown and Pittsburgh districts. He recalls 1850 Sault Ste Marie as a small village with two hotels a trading post and a bustling fur trade centered on the St Marys River falls.
