Lorain County Brucellosis Tests Begin in May
Lorain County dairy herds will start milk ring testing for brucellosis in mid May under a county initiative. Pre Planting Care for Nursery Stock In Columbus
Vernon Patterson of The Ohio State University extension outlines methods to protect nursery stock that cannot be planted on arrival. Refrigerated storage at 32 to 10 degrees and about 85 percent humidity conserves small flat plants and deciduous trees, while heeling in with soil in a shallow trench offers a practical alternative on many Ohio farms.

Incrossbred Hens Outlay The Purebred
Dr. George Jaap of Ohio State University told Farm and Home Week farmers that crossbred hens lay more eggs than purebreds and crossbreds outperform crossbreds in laying. Mortality in laying houses is similar across types, with minor differences in egg quality. Crosses have shell quality edge but purebreds show thicker white scores. Crosses with heavy breeds produce tinted eggs and more meat and blood spots. Jaap warned against strain crossing without testing due to higher mortality and lower egg production. In broilers crossbred chicks often grow faster, with Red Cornish Wes Hampshire as a strong cross yet red feathers and poor hatchability are drawbacks. He predicts crossbred chicks will be future broiler stock.
