Inmate Assault Case Spurs Discipline and Charges
An inmate accused of assaulting a teacher faces prison discipline and criminal charges. Lorain Correctional Institution, housing 1,926 inmates in a facility built for 756, was cited as Ohio’s most crowded state prison at 297.5 percent in a 2009 inspection. The center serves as the northern reception facility for new inmates and houses returning home programs, with 992 close security inmates and 85 percent awaiting assignment. Staff reductions and rising younger, more defiant inmates raise concerns of volatility.
