Lightning kills Oberlin man on Huron pier
A 32-year-old Oberlin man active in the Oberlin NAACP was struck by lightning and killed on the Huron pier during a sudden thunderstorm yesterday. Charlie J. Allen, of 30 E. Hamilton Sr., was pronounced dead at Sandusky Memorial Hospital after rescue squads worked to revive him. He had been fishing near the end of the pier by Showboat Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge on Main Street when hit at the pier base. Allen, a laborer with B.S. Scott Masonry Co., lived in Oberlin 13 years and was active in the NAACP and Rust United Methodist Church. He left a wife, two young sons, parents, several siblings, and grandparents. Funeral services are set for Monday at East United Methodist Church in Oberlin. Col. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery.
