The comedy Butterflies Are Free will be staged at Elyria West High School Sunset Theatre with performances April 22 and 23 at 8 15 p.m and April 24 at 2 15 p.m. Kim Dugan plays Mrs Baker and Kim Pandy is Jill Tanner in this campus production.
The Chronicle-Telegram earned a Roy W. Howard Public Service honor at the Scripps-Howard Foundation Journalism Awards in New York City for its ongoing probe of fund shortages in the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Assistant City Editor Karel Neikirk accepted the award as the CT competed with top outlets for public service journalism.
Elyria area principal C Kenneth Mundorf says corporal punishment is sometimes effective to deter misbehavior and to show we mean business. Officials emphasize warnings, second opinions, and age and health considerations, with paddling used only after other methods fail.

Washington reports the nations economy expanded 5.2 percent in the first quarter, the fastest rise in a year, driven by weather and higher prices. GNP was estimated at 1.297 trillion, inflation at about 3.0 percent despite wholesale price spikes. Recovery parallels last year’s early surge but slowed in later quarters, influencing tax rebate discussions.
The Supreme Court ruled New Hampshire cannot force Jehovah’s Witnesses George and Maxine Maynard to display the Live Free or Die motto on their license plates. Chief Justice Burger warned the state invades the First Amendment sphere of intellect and spirit.
