Olson Critics Tuition Freeze Plan At Ohio Colleges

COLUMBUS An Ohio House Finance subcommittee plans a two year tuition freeze for two year and four year colleges, as part of the next two year budget. The panel, led by Patrick Sweeney, added 43.8 million to the governor’s 1.51 billion higher education package, but no relief for graduate and professional schools. LCCC President Omar Olson warns the freeze may require fee increases if the budget shrinks. Chancellor Edward Moulton welcomes the move aimed at stabilizing undergraduate fees.

U S to Expel Two South African Envoys

The United States will expel two South African diplomats in retaliation for spy charges against three Americans at the U S embassy. Formal announcement was planned for later. The action follows Prime Minister Botha claiming Americans photographed military targets from the embassy plane. Officials said the move was decided this morning and may reflect a shifting view of the incident.

Pride of Baltimore searched by computer aided methods

The Coast Guard expands an Atlantic search for the Pride of Baltimore and its 11 crew members amid strong winds and a storm risk. The 136 foot wooden schooner, part of a winter Caribbean cruise, departed Oct 19 and was expected in Norfolk this week. A computer will analyze winds currents to yield probable areas as planes from Coast Guard Air Force and Navy join the effort.

CEI seeks 25 percent rate rise for Muny Light

Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co plans to file for a 25 percent electricity price increase to Cleveland Municipal Light Plant. If approved, most or all of the rise would be passed to Muny Light customers. FERC will hold a public hearing in Washington after filing and have 60 to 120 days to act. CEI notes its wholesale Muny Light rate has not risen for years while retail rates rose in 1976.

Easter Weekend Weather Outlook and Temps

The National Weather Service expects warm temperatures in the 60s for Saturday and Sunday with rain possible. Expect a damp weekend with cloudy humid conditions today and tonight. Thunderstorms push rain chances to about 70 percent today, 20 percent overnight. Thursday's late afternoon hit 78 degrees, not a record. the April 12 record is 84 degrees set in 1977 by observer Ray Diederich.
