Annual hare-raising event and a large Elyria development plans

Neighborhood Easter display by Jim and Rita Mrdenovich at 6234 Elyria Ave marks seven years of seasonal rabbits and colorful eggs. Elyria developer Lorne J. Elbert Jr. proposes College Green with 65 acres for single family homes and 10 acres for commercial use on 74 acres, totaling about 50 million dollars. The commercial core at Abbe Road and Antioch Drive includes a 24 hour grocery, appliance store, restaurant, shoe repair and savings and loan. Construction timing depends on weather with 208 residential lots planned and half reserved for Elbert’s company.

Parkway considers sixth option for East River Parkway plan

About 100 eastside Elyria residents packed city hall to hear five proposed routes for the East River Parkway and learn of a sixth option to do nothing. Richland Engineering presented four construction options under 3.7 million, one at 6.7 million, with environmental studies to follow. right-of-way costs were pending. No decision was made, as City Council must choose a plan and outline an environmental impact study.

Ronnie Milsap and the Oak Ridge Boys are slated to headline this year’s Lorain County Fair. The Oak Ridge Boys perform Aug 24 and Ronnie Milsap appears Saturday Aug 25. Story on Page E-1.

Gasoline prices inch up amid Sohio Shell increases

A Lorain County survey finds regular gas averaging 75 cents a gallon with stations ranging from 71.9 to 79.9 cents. Sohio raises prices at company stations and wholesale levels while Shell lifts wholesale rates. self serve undercuts by about two cents. Some independents have not yet raised pump prices. Easter travelers will pay more but fueling up should be easy as pages turn to A-4.

Teamsters drift back to work after tentative pact

A spokesman for the Ohio Conference of Teamsters predicted most drivers and warehouse workers would return by early next week after Tuesday night’s tentative national master freight agreement. Dissidents, mainly steel haulers from FASH, kept fewer trucks arriving at U.S. Steel Lorain Works, with 30 to 40 percent of normal levels reported.

Uganda calls manhunt for Amin as death toll cited

Kampala based provisional government demands Amin face gallows after accusing him of up to 500000 deaths. A radio broadcast urges Ugandan troops to surrender within 12 hours or face consequences, while Amin is said to have broadcast from Soroti stating he will fight on.

Devastated Wichita Falls imposes all night curfew

A dusk to dawn curfew and price freezes were imposed in Wichita Falls Texas as survivors of a deadly tornado faced disrupted power water and looting risks Debris filled streets as search teams worked through the rubble while officials warned the death toll could rise in the disaster that struck the Texas Oklahoma border area with 56 dead reported in multiple communities and more than 600 injured overall.
