Coast Guard rescues two teens after 17 hour Lake Erie drift
Two 16 year old Avon Lake boys survived more than 17 hours at sea in a six foot dinghy off Huntington Beach Bay Village after their improvised sea anchor and oars failed. They drifted to about five miles offshore before a Coast Guard helicopter plucked them from near freezing water. The youths had set out from Avon Point with no life preservers and used a sail as a sea anchor to slow drift as winds shifted. Authorities launched a search once the boys were reported missing.
