Three area high school seniors Linda A C Leeson Brendlyn D Faison and Patricia K Parker are among about 1300 National Merit four year scholarship winners. Leeson of Avon Lake High School plans political science. Faison of Admiral King High School biochemistry. Parker of North Olmsted High School mathematics. Scholarships range 100 to 1500 a year based on need and are funded by corporations and foundations.

Mineta wins San Jose mayor race in historic sweep
Norman Mineta captured a landslide in a 15 candidate mayoral contest, becoming the first Japanese American to lead a major U.S. city. He won 30,496 of 49,777 votes with David Goglio a distant second at 6,902. Mineta previously served on the City Council and as vice mayor. He recalled wartime relocation experiences for Japanese Americans and called the victory a breakthrough for minority political success.

Pick-Carter Hotel Fire Kills Seven In Cleveland
A hotel blaze at the Pick-Carter in Cleveland killed seven and injured seven. Victims included Mrs Carroll Carlson and her one year old daughter Corina, and Mrs Robin Johnson with her child Melissa. The fire struck the banquet room then spread through the lobby and floors as guests retreated. Russell F Carlson, husband of Carroll, was silage manager of the Hair road show production.

A blaze at a 600 room hotel injures seven people including two firemen and leaves one elderly guest and a child rescued from upper floors. Couple seeks over $10,000 over son's eye injury in toy cannon case
A Sheffield Lake couple filed suit in US District Court against Conestoga Co. Inc Bethlehem Pa and Gee Bee Department Store Johnstown Pa seeking more than $10,000 damages for the loss of their son's eye after a Big Bang Cannon misfired July 7 1969 at the boy's grandparents home. The toy was designed defective and manufactured by Conestoga and sold by the department store.
