Price Support Chief Defends Policy View Before Congress
James A. McConnell, newly appointed head of the Commodity Stabilization Service, told the House Subcommittee on Agricultural Appropriations on March 12 that his resistance to strict high price supports does not handicap his administration. He said he was chosen for experience, not attitude, and acknowledged political pressure and past criticisms of slow policy shifts. He warned that keeping seven billion dollars in CCC commitments and large stockpiles could wreck the market and private industry if not wound down orderly.
