French defenders recaptured a strongpoint at Dien Bien Phu as they attacked from the eastern flank. Communist Gen Vo Nguyen Giap orders resistance until death while planning a larger assault. Red commandos damaged the airstrip and attacked a southern fortification amid a weeks-long siege.
At a testimonial dinner at Elyria Country Club, Harold A. Zealley was honored for chairing the drive that raised 40,150 for the Elyria Red Cross, surpassing a 38,970 goal by nearly 1,200. David P. Hyman chaired the board meeting and Zealley received a plaque.
Mayor J Grant Keys and Elyria Democratic chair Gibson Moore were in a coffee shop when Pat McHale and friends celebrated her 21st birthday. Keys congratulated her and urged voting Democratic in the next election as the group sang Happy Birthday. Every vote counts, indeed.
United Press reports mostly cloudy and windy for the area with a high of 70 today, followed by thundershowers and mild conditions. Tonight’s low around 54, with Sunday morning showers then partly cloudy and cooler. Friday’s temperature range 27 to 57, no precipitation in the last 24 hours. Dr. W. H. Hull of 305 Eastern Heights Blvd died at Elyria Memorial Hospital this afternoon. The body will be at Dicken Funeral Home with funeral arrangements to be announced.
An 18 year old Oberlin youth, Frank H Nagyvathy, died at Norwalk Memorial Hospital after a crash on Route 20 near Route 303 at 12 30 a m. Two other Oberlin residents, Trester and LaPorte, were hospitalized in critical condition with skull fractures and neck injuries. Police Chief Lloyd Skinner said excessive speed caused the vehicle to leave the road, roll several times, and eject all three occupants. Nagyvathy survived by parents, a brother, four sisters, a grandmother and grandfather. Services are set for 2 p m Monday at Cowling Stong Funeral Home with burial in Westwood Cemetery.
Ralph John Herman a longtime Oberlin barber died at Crile Hospital Parma after a four year illness. Born January 2, 1897 in Dover he lived at 140 East College Street and moved to Oberlin 28 years ago where he ran a shop above the Oberlin Inn. He served in World War I and was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Church at Dover. Surviving are his wife Gertrude and three sisters Mrs. Frank Conn Mrs. Elmer Marsh of Dover and Mrs. Carl Heid of Monroe Michigan. A brother and a sister preceded him in death. The body is at Cowling Stang Funeral Home with services pending.

Misleading recruitment by Union Circulation Co affiliates led Elyria police to order 15 sales crew members to leave town. Three questioned, including Charles Westover, Rodney Speck, and Ann Hall, while associates used polio sympathy ploys to win favors and prizes. March of Dimes funds were noted as a factor.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said free governments must unite to end the Communist threat in Indo China. In a White House TV briefing he outlined unity as essential for a peaceful Geneva outcome and a broader defense of Southeast Asia, noting Thailand already backs U S views. He heads to London and Paris to solidify a united front before the April Geneva conference on Korea and Indo China.
British test pilots will fly a Comet jet through extreme maneuvers in a bid to solve three fatal crashes. The tests, with De Havilland and BOAC, follow Stromboli crash findings and BOAC director Miles Thomas’s ceiling-at-33,000-feet theory. Eagle carrier heads to Naples with bodies and wreckage.
