Senate seeks compromise to avoid vote on sit-down strikes
In Washington on April 3 Senate leaders pursued a compromise to prevent an outright vote condemning sit-down strikes as public policy. They used the weekend recess to talk with both advocates and opponents of the measure. The move aims to avoid delaying the Guffey Coal Control bill, to which the Byrnes Anti-Sit-Down amendment attaches. Meanwhile the House Rules committee granted access to Rep Martin Dies' push for a full investigation into sit-down strikes, likely to be taken up next week. Dies, a vocal opponent of sit-downs, would chair a seven member panel appointed by Speaker Bankhead to probe causes, industry conditions, and legality disputes.
