Its insulating and sanitary properties were developed by ancient builders, with Greeks and Romans expanding decorative use. King John praised its fire resistance after the London fire. Sanitary laws in many states require plastered habitable rooms. It protects against cold drafts and heat, and costs 1 to 4 percent of total building cost with no cheap substitute matching its service life.
