State Street bridge opens in Chicago Loop

The $3,000,000 State Street bridge over the Chicago River opened to traffic. Named the Bataan Corregidor Memorial bridge, it honors the men who resisted Japanese forces in the Philippines at the start of World War II. The 108-foot double leaf bascule ends a decade long dead end on the Loop’s White Way. The former bridge stood torn down in 1939. War steel shortages and price spikes delayed construction, making it the fifth bridge on its site.
