GE Pay Raise Push Warns of Mass Layoffs
New York May 2 AP General Electric warns that fourth round wage increases and broader benefits sought by the CIO would spark layoffs and higher prices in the electrical manufacturing sector. GE opposes union demands, arguing they are inflationary and would raise costs, reduce production, and force marginal plants out of business. Union leaders insist gains can occur without price increases, noting profits are high and wages average 1.50 an hour for a 40 hour week.
