Coal Industry Walkout Cuts Little From Economy

The latest coal walkout made only a small dent in the nation’s economy with about 35,000 railroad workers furloughed. Road spokesmen cited a general freight downturn as a key factor in reducing shop staff and expect many furloughs to last beyond the shutdown. Bethlehem Steel laid off 500 workers in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, calling it a readjustment due to soft orders. Some guessed the stoppage aims to trim the country’s coal reserves and bolster bargaining, while others noted a one-week strike could leave 55 to 60 million tons of coal above ground.
