Seven Billion Dollar Housing Plan Aims at Major Cities
A six year national public housing drive budgeted at seven billion dollars targets nearly every large city and many smaller ones. An AP survey shows 61 cities in states allowing subsidized low rent housing have plans for about 256,000 units, about 60,000 more than in 1945. Big cities lead, with only a portion started in the next year. Rentals vary from 10 to 55 dollars monthly, and costs per family unit range from five to eleven thousand dollars, averaging around eight and a half thousand. Twenty-two states lack slum clearance laws.
