Dorotha Stoner, 13, of Brumbaugh Road North Canton, earned second place in the junior Chicken of Tomorrow contest in Columbus. She raises New Hampshire Red hens developed in Minerva with disease resistance and quick maturation. Don Smith of Xenia won first in juniors. Theodore Feucht of Navarre took fifth. Dorotha belongs to Greentown 4-H, will start Greentown High School this fall. There were no Stark County entries in the senior contest.
Timken plants in Canton and four other Ohio cities resume full operations after the United Steel Workers accepted a one year contract calling for hourly wage raises for 2,867 workers and the right to reopen after 90 days. The deal ends a potential strike and could raise annual payroll costs by about 600 000 to 700 000 dollars across five plants.
A mother writes heartfelt letters to her son jailed in Stark County Juvenile Detention Home after a car theft and break in, urging him to leave the gang, cooperate with probation officer Andrew J. A fire at the State Agricultural Experiment Station Horticulture Building in Wooster caused about $20,000 in damage. The blaze on the second floor gutted a laboratory and two offices, with water damage to an engineer's office and loss of records. Kent State University Canton will stay open through the 1949 50 academic year and close July 1 1950. Akron Canton airport officials report an 80 000 dollar expansion plan approved by the Civil Aeronautics Authority awaits only authorization to let contracts. The project adds a service building and hangar line taxiways. cost is shared by Stark and Summit counties under a five year airport improvement program.

A 10 month old boy, Mark Nevin Abrigg, sustained serious gunshot wounds to the left foot after a loaded 16 gauge shotgun fell from a closet during an afternoon accident at their home in Aultman Hospital reported he and his mother Katherine Abrigg and sister Carolyn were treated and released. Deputies said Ronnie Abrigg, 3, opened the closet door as the gun discharged with one exploded shell.
In Honolulu on July 16 AP reports 96 striking pickets were arrested to break a union attempt to block the first unloading by Hawaii Stevedores Ltd. The Isthmian Steamship Co. freighter Steel Flyer, loaded in Mobile Alabama, began unloading tin plate fertilizer foodstuffs autos and steel pipe with 59 men aboard. Police priced disorderly conduct for refusing to move as a six inch knife was found on a picket. The nonunion crew is paid $1.40 hourly while strikers demand $1.72. 33 crew members are AF of SIU Seafarers, awaiting NY headquarters instructions.
The army suspended Maj. Gen. Herman Feldman and Maj. Gen. Alden Harry Waitt amid a Senate probe into alleged influence in contract awards. Secretary Gordon Gray ordered hearings while citing evidence of improper data sharing and procurement irregularities. Both generals denied involvement as the investigation unfolds.
