Steel Output Slumps to 60 Percent Amid Strike Threat
Cleveland July 11 AP Steel-making fell last week to 60 percent of rated ingot capacity, with recovery tied to a strike threatened for July 16. Even without action, only partial recovery is expected after the July 4 holiday. The rate is the lowest since mid-1946, down from 80 percent before the holiday. Officials note possible delay of a strike by 60 to 90 days if Truman proposes. Spotty buying remains the rule as premium prices fade but standard pricing holds. Supply now meets demand, with 20 steel products shipping in about 34 days.
