Acting president Dr. Barkley delivers the semester opening address titled Some Things By The Way, praising Alma College standards and urging students toward enduring scholarship. The talk recalls past editors and the Nassau Literary Magazine, noting the college’s literary culture and traditions.
Twenty two automobiles were stolen in Michigan's small towns and rural districts recent days. Cases include a Maxwell near Niles, a Ford from Jackson and a Buick Six from Flint agent Edward Hunt, plus a Peerless driven to East Jordan. Insurance pitches rise as auto theft and crashes injure many. multiple judgments listed in Calhoun Genesee Bay and other counties.
Work on the Alma St Louis highway advances with first coating laid on east half and slag deliveries of twenty four cars expected to complete the west half. Deputy Highway Commissioner endorses plans, predicting a banner road for the state, and locals propose naming the route Hamilton Highway to honor Commissioner Hamilton and city boards.

The Republic Truck Co through their Columbus agent sold seven trucks to the post office department in Columbus. The trucks were installed this morning and delivered last Wednesday in a ceremonial procession across the state. Eight complete trucks a day are being produced this month.
Alma residents rely on rooftop weather signals at the Opera House to interpret forecasts. White flag means fair weather, black signals an approaching storm, white over black or black over white indicate changing conditions. A white flag with a black center warns of a sudden temperature drop.
At a meeting of the association the group decided to continue business until July 1914 the end of the installment fund and then set a plan for the location. The association is among the oldest in the state and aims to loan money on real estate. Allie Stenten of Lauking spends a few evenings with the group. Mingo from Republic Motor Truck line is praised. L A Mather and wife of Newton Iowa arrived. Mr Mathes to manage the gas work for Gratiot County Gas. he is a competent gas man with years of experience.
The Parsmers Club gathering at J Hawnemann, Ortaber, featured an address of welcome by J Hi Hawnemann, minutes read, roll call, and several songs. More than a hundred men gathered Tuesday evening at the M EB M church for the Fourth Annual Banquet of the Men's Bible Class. The program featured toasts by Rev. T G Brownlow and others, a meat banquet, songs, and games, with a late social at Wright Hall and a serenade to the girls.
Chas Button received favorable mention in the Daily Ypsilantian Press for his role in the musical comedy A Knight for a Prince. His duet with Miss Wilcox and his whistling numbers drew loud encores as the show heads to Alma on Friday with a home talent cast including Mr. Rutifton.
Silay Farrier of St. Louie underwent surgery for an orbital abscess and was discharged on Wednesday. Miss Bernice Marsh nurses at J. B. Tubbs home. the Whitehead child had enlarged tonsils removed. Miss Tousley nurses at North Star. The hospital undergoes renovation and expansion with four more rooms for occupancy. A basket supper and "met acquainted" hour at M E Church preceded a prayer meeting, a monthly event now planned.
NEW FIRM Ben Mindel, long time road representative for Pollasky & Co. fur dealers, buys Dan Brown Bazaar in Church block door west of post office. Mrs Mindel will run store while he stays on the road. Brown remains a few weeks to aid transition. E R Sly and wife of Bay Shore visit Chas Rhodes family. Sly, an old soldier, spent time in Andersonville and WWI era prison camps, attending regiment reunion at Minneapolis.
Omelof announces a baby beauty contest during Good Hall Week ending October 8. Prizes include gold and silver medals for best developed baby from ages one to three and the most developed baby overall. Examinations take place at Atma High School Octobers Sch with judges from Grathy County physicians.
The Boat of Trade on Tuowlay street seeks Med W Rotlin to develop land near Gare Plikht for a Parr ots Produce Ware Hoos project. Objections exist to begin building promptly. Redman is cited as core to the Alms venture. The article previews experienced producers and forecasts strong enterprise for Alvin and Girona amid the new operation.
On Wednesday at the home on Ely Street a 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Grover concluded with a family reunion. From Iowa thirty eight years ago the couple have grown beloved by many friends. Ten children attended except Perry in Supkatchewan and Frank in North Carolina. Present were numerous relatives from Albany Oregon Shepherd Detroit Marion Alma and more. A noon dinner followed and the couple received a fine Davenport as a gift. The reunion was reported as a great success and best wishes were extended for many more happy years.
Ithaca High School defeats Alma 7 to 0 at Davis Field in a hard fought game. New players on both sides limited scoring chances as Ithaca capitalized on a late drive with a blocked punt and a short touchdown run. Alma showed solid defense but could not cross the Ithaca line.
