Mt Pleasant Indians defeated Alma High School 18 to 7 in a hard fought football game. Mt Pleasant opened with a touchdown but Alma answered with a score before halftime, and Mt Pleasant added a second TD in the third to pull away. Referee Goodrich of Ithaca and umpire Johnston of Alma officiated.

L. Hempstead, 64, brought to Ithaes from Flint on September 30 on a serious charge connected to Lizzie Odell. Odell, described as mentally deficient, lives at Gratiot County Poor Farm with an infant of four or five months. Hempstead appeared before Justice John M. Everson, October 1, waived examination, hearing set for October 6 with Judge Stone as defense attorney.

Henry Diets was found intoxicated with his car in a ditch on Orchard Street last Saturday. Marshal Wright jailed him in the village lockup at Porrigo's Garage, but by morning he escaped through a broken jail with a hacksaw, and fled.

Miss Duff, former Alma College student and assistant principal at Tonia High School in St. Louis Michigan, won first prize of $100 in a National Panama Pacific expository short story contest. A 1915 University of Michigan graduate in rhetoric and English, she submitted “What Could Have Happened to Lyde” through the University YWCA chapter. The story was entered reluctantly due to lack of time and entries.

State superintendent vows strict truancy enforcement
Fred L. Keeler, state superintendent of public instruction, says children under 10 must attend school hereafter and the current law will be enforced.
