Farewell Banquet for Lester H. Hayt Before Pasadena Move

About forty friends honored Lester H. Hayt at the Wright House with a social evening and banquet. Hayt, a long time Alma citizen, will move with his family to Pasadena, California next week after joining a growing business career begun in Alma in 1800 with bazaar stock and later grocery and stock company ventures.

A menu like list appears with items such as braised mushrooms boiled whitefish matre de hotel and condiments like Hollandaise Port Wine Punch and Cranberry Sauce. The passage also notes a business figure, Mr Hayt, who built department stores in multiple cities then moved to Pasadena with expectations of future ventures and good health. Golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Gilson North observed

Mr and Mrs Gilson T North celebrated their golden wedding on September 19 at their Sethton home with nearly thirty relatives. A gold themed supper, gold ribbons and dahlias decorated the table, and gold coin and gold banded dishes were given as presents. Mr North expressed thanks for the kind remembrances.

Fire destroys Alma asphalt plant causing $15000 loss

A fire last Monday destroyed the American Asphalt Mastic Co. plant in Alma, with an estimated $15,000 loss. The blaze started from a leaking melting tank and burned the warehouse as 100 tons of asphaltum ignited, and no insurance covered the building or contents except for boiler coverage. The plant, built about a year ago at a cost near $10,000 and capitalized at $115,000, had few rivals in the U S with two other plants in Edwardsville and Oakland.

Many Woodchoppers Enjoy Evening in Alma

The M W A camp in Gratiot county Alma held a Tuesday evening event with 226 attendees. A torch light parade led by Pompeii band featured officers in carriages and a humorous lodge goat. Eleven candidates were initiated, Britt Team drill impressed, and Royal Neighbors served a decorated banquet for 225. Speakers included BE F Burns, George Aldrich, and A R Canfield. Attendees came from Ithaca St Louis Breckenridge Bannister Percinton Middleton Sumner Riverdale Pompeii Mt. Pleasant Shepherd Belting and Grand Rapids. The gathering was hailed as one of the finest in Alma Camp No 142 history.
