One Hundred Men Leaving for Battle Creek Training

Forty percent of the county quota departs to Battle Creek to begin training. The group includes local volunteers meeting at the county depot before departure.

Alma Post Office Adds Clerks and Carrier

New clerks and a carrier are approved for the Alma post office. The two new clerks begin immediately, the new carrier starts October 1, with route changes likely. A substitute carrier will also be provided. Despite growth, 170 houses in 24 blocks lack delivery service, though sidewalks are expanding and delivery may come soon. If that occurs, a sixth carrier may be added to the office.

Alma College Opens for 1917 Term Amid Enrolment Surge

Home Guard to March as Guard of Honor for Gratiot Draftees

About 109 Gratiot county men leave the draft office Friday morning for Battle Creek training camp. The Alma home guard company of over 100 men will form a guard of honor and march to the depot with the draftees. Guards meet at city hall at 6 40 a m then proceed to the draft office.

Bound Over Ince Johnston On Sex House Charge Citing Circuit Court

The hearing for Ince Johnston on a running a house of prostitution charge ended with Johnston bound over to circuit court on $600 bonds, not furnished. Witnesses Pave Boucher and Albert Fichorn testified strongly, with Johnston remaining in custody until bail is posted. Immedi ately after, Iva Slife examination on a aiding charge proceeded. Treva Sanderson, her sister, testified but did not support the prior grand jury statements, and the case was dismissed. Olive Smith, former teacher, noted. Treva Sanderson, Alma high school student, was to be sent to an industrial school in New York City and may enter Columbia University in Adrian.

Ithaca Hosts Drafted Men Parade In Gratiot County

Ithaca and the Gratiot County Red Cross entertain 109 drafted men before Friday’s departure to Battle Creek for the National Army cantonment. A barbecue follows, with an automobile parade and patriotic addresses. veterans and families are warmly welcomed to bid farewell to the soon-to-be enlistees.

Alma faces need for a new permanent school house

Crowded Alma public schools continue to grow as new students enroll daily. Superintendent A F Schulte warns two new temporary buildings will not suffice and a permanent facility is likely within the coming year. He notes 180 primary pupils yesterday and eight new entrants today, with about sixty pupils per teacher and several vacancies to fill, including manual training staff. Deputy Munson of the State Board of Education approved the temporary schools during a visit.

Alma College to refund tuition for draftee students

Alma College announces a plan to return tuition to students who may be called by the draft this year. A credit error and theatre silver credit influenced the policy, with grants tied to appearances in a Mutual film comedy and enlistment timing during the school year. The program extends for the war duration and is set to begin around September 22.
