Forty percent of the county quota departs to Battle Creek to begin training. The group includes local volunteers meeting at the county depot before departure.
A long list details One Hundred and Nine drafted men from Gratiot county called for service. Names include Alma, West Ward, and Birmingham residents among others with a note that they will report Friday to depart for military duty. Alternates listed and an accompanying notice confirms certification for service.
New clerks and a carrier are approved for the Alma post office. The two new clerks begin immediately, the new carrier starts October 1, with route changes likely. A substitute carrier will also be provided. Despite growth, 170 houses in 24 blocks lack delivery service, though sidewalks are expanding and delivery may come soon. If that occurs, a sixth carrier may be added to the office.
H K Moore long time cashier at Alma State Savings bank resigns to join Industrial Savings bank of Flint. Board approves unanimous resolutions praising his service and expressing regret, noting higher salary and broader opportunities while wishing him success in new role. Moore highly regarded in church and community for integrity and kindness.
City treasurer advises that all unpaid taxes may be paid at 1G Wright's furniture store with four percent charge on all unpaid taxes.
Alma College opened its thirty seventh year with the largest enrollment to date and more students expected. The first chapel featured Rev. Raymond Houston who spoke on the mind as the key to wealth and happiness, urging clean thoughts and good conduct. Class work began Wednesday after morning registrations.
Three men are being held as investigators search for tangible clues in the September murder of Beatrice Epler, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel H Epler. Authorities continue combing leads, with a possible county-wide scope and a reward anticipated at the board of supervisors meeting.
About 109 Gratiot county men leave the draft office Friday morning for Battle Creek training camp. The Alma home guard company of over 100 men will form a guard of honor and march to the depot with the draftees. Guards meet at city hall at 6 40 a m then proceed to the draft office.
Alma College coach Harry Helmer expresses dissatisfaction with available material for the coming season. Key loss of three players creates holes, with captain Gorton Peowch enlisting and others drafted or unavailable. New hopefuls include Howe, Mille, Narrance, Benner, Newton and Anderson, aiming to form a competitive eleven despite gaps.
Albert Shankel John Flansburg and Elmer Mapes named to night police by Chief Oscar Wibber and approved by the city council. Four or five men recommended. preparations to start them immediately with Mapes and Flansburg slated for Monday and Tuesday nights. Special Officer James Campbell to continue day work until October when policing ordinance takes full effect.
The hearing for Ince Johnston on a running a house of prostitution charge ended with Johnston bound over to circuit court on $600 bonds, not furnished. Witnesses Pave Boucher and Albert Fichorn testified strongly, with Johnston remaining in custody until bail is posted. Immedi ately after, Iva Slife examination on a aiding charge proceeded. Treva Sanderson, her sister, testified but did not support the prior grand jury statements, and the case was dismissed. Olive Smith, former teacher, noted. Treva Sanderson, Alma high school student, was to be sent to an industrial school in New York City and may enter Columbia University in Adrian.
The European cafe under Nick Baniavil and Company has undergone a major remodel this past week. Interior repainting and decoration are complete while exterior painting proceeds. new exhaust fans will improve kitchen sanitation. Owner Bardlayi told the Record that all measures are taken to boost service quality and ensure the highest food standards.
Ithaca and the Gratiot County Red Cross entertain 109 drafted men before Friday’s departure to Battle Creek for the National Army cantonment. A barbecue follows, with an automobile parade and patriotic addresses. veterans and families are warmly welcomed to bid farewell to the soon-to-be enlistees.
Crowded Alma public schools continue to grow as new students enroll daily. Superintendent A F Schulte warns two new temporary buildings will not suffice and a permanent facility is likely within the coming year. He notes 180 primary pupils yesterday and eight new entrants today, with about sixty pupils per teacher and several vacancies to fill, including manual training staff. Deputy Munson of the State Board of Education approved the temporary schools during a visit.
Alma College announces a plan to return tuition to students who may be called by the draft this year. A credit error and theatre silver credit influenced the policy, with grants tied to appearances in a Mutual film comedy and enlistment timing during the school year. The program extends for the war duration and is set to begin around September 22.
The Gratiot County Sunday School Convention will be held at North Star. Delegates and church representatives are expected to attend for fellowship and planning sessions on upcoming Sunday school activities.
The thirty-second annual Gratiot County Sunday School association convention will be held in North Star on Saturday and Sunday September 20 and 21. An excellent two day program is planned with registration, hymn services, devotional talks, discussions on evangelizing Sunday schools, and workshops led by Rev. Wilkins Mumford Swem Watcher and others.
Alma College reports eight senior students have enlisted in branches of the U S military to fight Kaiteriam. Named are Second Lieutenant Lewis Sarvis, Bat Creek. Second Lieutenant Emmet Hollihan, Neate Creek. Fletcher Gallagher in the aviation corps Columbus. D Donald Steith, Flint hospital unit Camp Taylor. Leland Fitch, Melvin Vander. Flinds Sanches, Battle Creek. Gordon Prone enlisted Mon Jay.
