Alma High School gears for an 11 game season with a growing attendance and a large enrollment across public schools. The lineup features St Louis Ithack Mt Pleasant Owosso Arthur Hill Alpena and Fenton with home and away games starting September 28 at Alma and concluding November 5 against Fenton.

Meeting of Alma Business Men's Club at City Hall

A special meeting of the Alma Business Men's Commercial Club was held at City Hall last Wednesday night with many attending. A plan to increase housing was assigned to a committee to report later, amid concerns that Alma residents are leaving for lack of homes.

Health Week Plans in Gratiot County

Plans for the first Good Health Week in Gratiot County move forward with a constitution draft due October 4. The event runs October 1 to 4 with afternoon and evening sessions and music by Alma Public Schools, college voices, and Rev. Carolyn Bartlett Crane addressing attendees. A batter baby contest, prizes for top essays, and an address by State Food and Dairy Commissioner Helme are highlighted activities.

Elwell 0 0 F Temple Dedicated in Elwell

The Elwell lodge 0 0 F dedicated a new 4400 dollar two story temple on Main Street after a large afternoon service led by Grand Masters from the state. The brick building houses a grocery and millinery shop, an ice cream parlor, banquet hall, kitchen, storage, and a main lodge room with modern fittings. The project, six years in planning, was funded by local efforts and features two stairways and electric lighting.

Death of Pine River farmer in Tuesday accident

Korwh Fookds a well known Pine River township farmer died instantly when struck by a limb while gathering firewood near his porch. He was 49, married 27 years, with one son Glen. Big W. C. T. U. Convention Held in City

The seventh statewide convention of the W. C. T. U. drew forty five delegates from seven counties Gratiot Midland Shiawassee Montcalm Baganaw Isabella and Clare in the Pree torlad Church Alma hosted Tuesday to Thursday. Mrs Norma F Madge of St Louis was elected president for the coming year with Mrs McKinney of Saginaw as Vice President at Large Edina Fuller of Farwell named Recording Secretary Mary Christian of Chesmuning Corresponding Secretary and Etta Killian of Carland treasurer. Memorial services honored twelve members lost in the year. Evening programs featured speeches music by a male quintet a pipe organ solo and a ladies trio. Next convention planned for Lakeview.

Farewell reception for Charles Dutt Jr at Hille School

The Hille School of the Church of Christ hosted a farewell for Charles Dutt Jr at Dan Zinn’s home on Euclid Avenue. About seventy five guests attended as games and music filled the evening with ice cream and cake served later. Dutt leaves for Lexington to attend college after nearly a year as Bible School superintendent and active church participant.

Surprise Birthday Party for James E. Allen

Petition for street lights in village with Gratiot County Gas

Officials of Gratiot County Gas submit a street lighting proposal to the village council. Company to furnish and install lamps not to exceed 27.50 and lighting at 35.00 per year per street, including mantles and extinguishing. Petition signed by villagers asks council to enter contract for illuminating alleys and main streets, promising improved brightness and town pride.

Reorganization Set For Consolidated Light and Power

Three years after collapse the Consolidated Light and Power Company reorganizes with Letroit Trist Comyany in charge and stockholders asking Supreme Court permission to sell. Detroit Toledo and Mt Pleasant area holdings dominate, Hudson of Detroit among large creditors. Receivership halted progress but new capital aims to expand and extend lines into wider territory.

College Music Department to Open as Part of College

Prospects for large attendance at the manic department are strong as Prof Veatch takes charge. The Board of Trustees moves the Conservatory of Music to a college department, with Veatch Miew Roberts and assistants directing lessons. The kindergarten opens September 23 under Miss Caroleen Robinson.

Citizens Mutual Tomo Bile Insurance Company Formed

The organizers created a mutual company to cover fire theft and liability for members. After months of effort they secured interest from leading men across the state and began early to avoid late season hazards. Five hundred policies are being issued this week with many top agents joining, automobile owners showing strong support. Gas Company Reports Strong Year in Gratiot County

The Gratiot County Gas Company directors report a fiscal year with expenses near 40 000 in Alma and 10 000 in St Louis while total business reached about 26 000. Nearly 43 miles of mains laid, 600 premises connected, and 300 fuel stoves plus 150 gas appliances sold. Weather hindered progress but demand remains high as schools install domestic science gas equipment.

Old man builds a Ford from scraps in a folk tale style

An old man with no money crafts a car from a pipe, board, wire, wheels, and a tin can. He proclaims he will make a Ford, then purchases gas and oil and assembles the contraption. Meanwhile Mr and Mrs Walton travel to Saginaw to be with their hospitalized son.
