Central Michigan Grain and Bean Jobbers Banquet Review

The Central Michigan Grain and Bean Jobbers Association held its annual gathering at Wright House on Friday September 2 with large attendance and strong enthusiasm despite a poor bean crop and low grain quality. Speakers, music, and a farm tour followed a banquet hosted by Mr and Mrs Breary. Members elected officers led by President R A Law with new members admitted, as frost and rust depress Michigan wheat quality.

Fire Destroys Barn in Emerson Township

A late night blaze east of Ithaca consumed a barn with about 20 tons of hay harness and feed. Two horses escaped burned one fatally. a third died. Nearby structures housed 1000 bushels of oats 1500 bushels of wheat 2500 worth of tow and two straw stacks. The Liestman family and eight children were at home. origin unclear. The Michigan Mutual insured the barn for 1000.

Tragic Alma Fire Claims Stella Merjehant Oliver

Stella Merjehant Oliver, aged twenty four, died from burns after attempting to extinguish a lamp fire in her Alma home. The blaze started when the lamp exploded as she loaded it from a flickering flame. Fire officials and neighbors wrapped her in a carpet, but she suffered severe burns over most of her body and died Monday at Brainerd hospital after hours of pain. She leaves husband Charles Oliver and two young children Nettie and Myron. extended family in Alma will care for them. Her maiden name was Merjehant and she had lived in Alma all her life.

Proud Succeeds Delevan as Alma Merchant Leader

W C Proud of Charlotte will take over the dry goods and grocery stock of Charles L Delevan in Alma after a thorough inventory. Delevan, a central Michigan figure, retires after forty five years in business and public service including being Alma's first mayor. Proud, a widower with three children, will move to Alma and expand the stock and lines. store will close for two weeks for inventory.

Lawrence Ellison Takes Dodge Agency in Alma Area

Lawrence Ellison, who has aided his brother Lloyd in the family grocery, has become the Dodge automobile agent for Alma and surrounding areas. He plans to build a garage at the corner of Park and Superior streets next spring and has ordered fifty cars for the coming year through Republic Motor Truck Company. Tom Bates of Republic Motor Truck Company stayed at his Portland Michigan home from Friday to Tuesday.

Two New Professors at College Hire Promises for Year

The Board of Trustees yesterday approved Rev. Charles D. Brokenshire of Springfield Massachusetts as instructor in Biblical literature succeeding Rev. W H Mason. Charley A Maney of Williams Bay Wisconsin was named as in Revers in physica succeeding I Zimmerman. Maney is Marietta College and Princeton Seminary graduate and has taught at Macalester College and the Yerkes Observatory before joining the faculty.

W C T U Convention in Alma Meets in Presby terian Church

The Thirty fifth Annual Convention of the Eighth W C T U will be held at the Presbyterian church in Alma on September 14 15 and 16 2015 with various sessions including roll call of officers and superintendents, seating of delegates, committee appointments, reports and discussion, memorial service and an executive board meeting. Local officials and educators contribute greetings and music as the program outlines readings songs and instits. The convention will feature reports of credentiam committee election of officers delegates to the national convention and a series of devotional and organizational activities.

Agriculture program expands as Alma public schools start year

Alma public schools began the year with strong enrollment and new programs. An agricultural course will run five days a week taught by Prof. Floyd Maxwell, including seed care, soil formation, stock care, tree spraying, and crop disease prevention. A department for classification and training of abnormal children is also established, with nine students enrolled.

Pined for Assault and Battery in Manns Court

James Shaffer was arrested and fined twelve dollars and costs in Justice of Peace Manns Court Wednesday for choking his step daughter. The two quarrelled and resorted to physical violence. Shaffer pleaded guilty and the sentence followed.

Mrs Weer Buried After Long Illness In Alma

Mrs. Weer died Friday night at her daughter Mrs George Bennett’s home in this city after a long illness. Funeral Sunday at the M E Church with Rev Brownlow presiding. Hymns chosen by the deceased and remarks by Brownlow and others highlighted the service. Born near London Ontario July 14 1845 she married John Weer of London Canada before moving to St John Michigan then Alma. She later lived with daughter Mrs Gunnett in Alma with a son John Weer of Clinton County among relatives. She joined the Methodist church early and lived a devout Christian life, patient and gentle throughout illness. She is survived by her daughter, son, and other relatives who mourn her passing.

Hunting Licenses Issued by Charles Murphy in Alma

Charles Murphy of Rhodes' drug store has been authorized by the Static Game Warden of Lansing to issue blank hunting licenses in Alma except for deer. Ithaca reports Alma parties submit most applications, causing local inconvenience, leading to Murphy’s appointment to handle the work in this city.
