Plan best of work in county on the trunk line for 1924

Gratiot County considers paving M-46 from Alma to the county line with state support. A key 1924 program would pave five and a half miles from St Louis to Breckenridge, costing about 165000 with county share around 41000. Officials urge spring funding to start preliminary work, bonds due 1925 release funds, and note traffic and beer-hauling issues on the current gravel road.

Auxiliary Elects New Officers for Coming Year

The American Legion Auxiliary of George W. Myers Post No 132 elected officers for the coming year, with President Mrs Earl Sadler and others named. Treasurer to assume duties January 1924. Meeting followed by plans for winter work and an October 12 gathering at Mrs G B Brown’s home. Post leadership vows to serve again if desired by the organization and aims to make the year highly successful. Comrade N Bardaville to furnish food for post gathering. Commander Robinson notes potential Legion Auxiliary club house details soon. Also notes urgent need for a suitable meeting place and site. Telephone bills due by the 20th with 10 percent cut for payment.

Dr Megaw to Speak at Health Meeting Mentioned in Gratiot County notes

A Good Health meeting is announced with Rev James S McGaw highlighted as a speaker on civic life and Christian political philosophy. The Gratiot County Good Health Society will convene at Gratiot city hall Monday October 9 at 7 30 pm to elect four directors and discuss business.

Well Known Resident Dies After Long Illness

John Gongwer a well known resident for over twenty years died at his daughter’s home in Ashland Ohio after a long illness. Born September 26 1852 in land county Ohio he was 70. He married Alice Stealy in 1881 and left behind a wife a daughter Carrie B Wharton of Ashland and son Guy S who died six months earlier. He lived in Ohio about twenty years then moved to Alma in fall 191. He worked for Swift and Company at the Alma plant a number of years retiring January 1 1922. He went to Ashland September 15 to live with his daughter and died Sunday. He is survived by his wife a daughter and five brothers. Funeral services were held at Mrs Carrie B Wharton’s home in Ashland with interment there.

Deputy J. M. Wood Named Gratiot County Deputy Sheriff

Deputy J M Wood appointed by the Gratiot sheriff to succeed Joseph Grover who sought the sheriff nomination at the recent primary. Mrs Perviville Howe of Toronto and Miss Lora of Exeter Ontario visited the city over the weekend, staying with aunts Mrs A W Wright and Miss Case.

Supreme Court Battle in Michigan Eighth District

The Michigan Eighth District dispute over the Bird J. Vincent nomination and a pending writ of mandamus centers on recounting ballots in six counties. The Saginaw board recounts showed a Vincent loss of ten votes, while the state certified his nomination based on the six counties tally, prompting further Supreme Court action and an appearance order for the Saginaw board.

Free Saturday Show Draws 2000 at Strand Theatre
