Ransom Allen DCAD Pioneer Dies at 88 in Gratiot

Ransom Allen born April 16 1833 in New York died after a day of illness at his Emerson township farm near Ithaca Michigan Funeral services held Monday at the First Methodist Church with Masonic and bank officials among floral tributes. He and Louisa Coffin had five children Jotham Nora Eurotas Archie Arilla. He lived in Ithaca for years and helped transform Gratiot from woods to farmland.

Mrs Francis King Speaks on Reforestation in Ann Arbor

Mrs Francis King spent Monday with friends in Detroit then spoke Tuesday to the Forestry Department of the Michigan Garden Club in Ann Arbor. She is fully qualified to discuss reforestation and the department members were fortunate to hear her highly engaging talk on the subject.

Gratiot County Court Hears Land Fraud Case Involving Souths

In Gratiot county circuit court last week a case of buying land covered with snow on recommendation of an interested party was decided with damages for fraud. Miss Mary Sharp and Mr. Thomas Fannelli led a well chosen cast with strong voices and natural acting, while Grant Cook and Paul Austin delivered creditable supporting turns. The production, directed by Prof. Reese Veatch, drew praise for its vim and above average amateur quality with engaging dancing and a warm crowd reception.

Enjoyable Concert by the Misses Sharp at Realty Opera House

The Euterpe society presented Misses Mary and Velma Sharp in a Tuesday evening concert. Velma displayed masterful technique in Chopin and Van Westerhout, while Mary offered a pure soprano with coloratura on La Traviata and Madame Butterfly arias. Sadie Messinger accompanied. the performance impressed a delighted audience.

Ithaca-born Hill City resident dies in logging train accident

Thomas Marr long associated with Ithaca and later Hill City Minnesota was killed when a logging train engine struck him as he stepped in front to retrieve logs. Funeral services were held in Ithaca with ministers Will Long and J. Q. Durfey officiating. Burial was in North Star Cemetery beside his wife. Marr, born in St Marys Ontario, had lived with his wife Minetta Hill since 1888 and had three children including Clifford and Vivian. one daughter died in infancy and Vivian died in 1908. He moved from Temple to Hill City later in life. The Marr family and relatives attended the funeral, with Mr and Mrs Ophir Haring of Three Rivers also present. Marr was remembered as a friend to many.

Adams Family Plans Move to New York City

Mr and Mrs W E Adams and son Warren will leave Alma on December 1 for New York City where they will reside. Adams has accepted a position with Bear and Juice Trunk Co covering the eastern territory, duties to begin January 1. He formerly worked for Edson Moore Co of Detroit and was regarded as a top salesman. The Adamses have many friends in Alma and Michigan who regret the departure.

Ithaca Triumphs 21 6 Over Alma In Football Clash

Ithaca High School defeated Alma 21 to 6 as Alma fumbled repeatedly and displayed overconfidence. Alma scored a late TD in the final minutes while Ithaca plans a return game at Alma on Saturday November 22. Mr and Mrs Decatur Coleman left late week for Ohio to visit relatives.

Fire at Chief Sartor Home on Woodworth Ave

Sunday fire alarm summoned the city department to Fire Chief Joseph Sartor’s home on Woodworth Avenue. A pantry blaze sparked by chimney sparks in a gale was quickly extinguished by Sartor using water, with the fire force arriving promptly. Damage was small and repaired Monday.

In Gratiot County Circuit Court Judge Sears directed a verdict of no cause for action in the case of Lowisa A Turck versus Farmers Mutual Insurance. The dispute arose from a barn fire in Arcada township and revealed unclear title after five transfers. Obituary: Job Newman of Ithaca Passes After Illness

Job Newman aged 80 years 8 months and 14 days died at the Kelley residence near Ithaca after a kitchen fire triggered illness. Born in England February 21 18%, he immigrated to the United States and married. Wife died October 16 1891. Funeral at Kelley home Friday November 7 at 12:20 led by Rev Beebe, burial North Star cemetery beside his wife.
