This first article in a series explains Alma High School English in detail. It covers first year composition with two weekly themes, class critiques, and study of narration description exposition and argument. It notes magazine stories, book reports, and vocational essays guiding students toward life work.
The program trains forceful writing through supervised themes and criticizes each piece in notebooks. Five outside reads are reported, with best works chosen. Year three centers on English literature from Milton to Shakespeare, plus an outside novel course. Continued on page 5.
Martin Pollasky died Wednesday evening November 4 1914 at his Pine River home after a long illness. Born in Germany in 1849 he served three years in the German army and later moved to Saginaw and then Pine River about 85 years ago. He underwent surgery in Saginaw September 2 and returned home September 18 where he died at 9:15 p.m. The funeral was held at his residence with Rev Gainder officiating and interment in Oak Grove cemetery.
Mr Hamilton Holt editor of the New York Independent will lecture on War and Peace under the International Peace Association at Alma College Chapel on Saturday evening November 21. Admission is free. Holt, a highly regarded thinker among American editors, is expected to give a speech worthy of careful attention. Every reader is invited to attend with no question and no collection.
The Boy Scouts of Troop I will clean city alleys on Saturday November 21. Place rubbish in boxes to speed the work.
Saturday is Homecoming Day in Alma as Olivet plays Alma in the season finale. Attend the game and explore bargains from Alma merchants advertised in this issue.
Grange session at Pomona Grange in Gratiot County drew attendees from Liberty Ithaca Sumner Arcada Montmorency and Star Granges. Miss Daphne McDaid and Vincent Palmer were elected state delegates, with Mr Baldwin re-elected to the executive committee. The afternoon featured talks on Grange progress banking guarantees and rural highways plus music and a Thanksgiving focus.
Owen Courter of a location 244 miles east of Him Hall or 2 miles south of Elwell will hold an auction sale of stock and farm tools on Monday November 2. J D Hetman is the Auctioneer and Wm Hutchinsor the Clerk. Earl Clapp visited his parents in North Star Sunday.
The Record reports the sudden death of editor Brown at his home on West Downey 1 on Wednesday evening November 11 at 7:30. A longer obituary will follow in a future issue for Record readers.
A box of roses received Monday November 9 at the Record office came from Mrs. Ed Creech of Salem Oregon. Gathered from her garden the flowers are of various colors and very beautiful. She notes The Last Rose of Summer was mentioned recently and she sent a bouquet from Growon. She adds that the last rose may have bloomed in Michigan but her yard is full of them.
Nov 6 Alma College heard Hugh Dickerson and Cyril Davis in a piano and violin recital. Dickerson impressed with technique and interpretation, especially in Intermezzo and Chopin pieces. Davis praised as an artist, standout selections included Bach Air and Perpetuum Mobile. Miss Roberts assisted. recital part of Alma Concert course. Also reports Gratiot County Gas Co extension to St Louis, 100 Alma patrons, and local social and visits including Miss Louise Hainline event and WBC Thimble Club plans.
A home talent production at the Opera House presented Miss Cherry Blossom with an elaborate tea garden setting in Tokyo. Miss Cherry delivered a refined performance with strong chorus numbers and encores for John Chick, while Kekemo and Togo’s plot twists provided comic energy. Despite lively acting, the show earned only about thirty five dollars due to competing college music events.
Alma high school outplayed Mason but costly fumbles and a missed forward pass in the third quarter doomed Alma. Fullback Mahr scored the only touchdown in the first quarter as Smith intercepted a high pass to spark Alma. Miss Anna Hamilton of Shepherd attended Alma Friday.
Fifteen young men from the College including Alma residents visited Dr. Blaisdell Sunday evening. They sang with Mrs Blaisdell at the piano, listened as the Doctor read poems including That Mother O Mine, and toasted mothers. A phonograph played the Alleluiah Chorus from the Messiah and God Be With Us Till We Meet Again before the guests dispersed.
The American Red Cross and the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis set a one year spending definition for Red Cross Seal proceeds. It limits funds to hospital care, maintenance of the tuberculous, camps, dispensaries, visiting nurses, open air schools, preventoria, and educational activities aimed at preventing infection. Dr. Charles J. Hatfield emphasizes directing money toward actions yielding the most results and avoiding wasteful, nonessential uses.
A despatch reports no new diphtheria cases in the last week but Ithaca schools are closed. Seven cases are quarantined and a large number of carriers found in second grade prompted the shutdown. No deaths, 21 positive throats from 40 cultures, swabs sent for examination, fumigation planned, books returned home for baking.
Alma defeated Ferris Institute 83 to 0 at Davis Field with reserves and regulars mixing to rest veterans and prepare for Oliver. Cole sparked a 94 yard TD return after a failed Ferris kickoff, supported by Fitch Hyde and Richards. Coaches Helmer and Zimmerman presided. substitutions included Richards for Gallagher and Miller for Miller to strengthen the line and defense.
Michigan defeated Pennsylvanian with 269 rushing yards and ten first downs to 69, boosting Wolver ine stock ahead of a showdown with Cornell. Maulbetsch is tipped as a likely All American back as Michigan plans to train for the Big Red. Local interest soars as 15,000 tickets remain for the Ithaca game amid preparations and hopes for another strong performance.
