Longtime Alma Record editor and owner Charles Joseph Brown died at home after heart trouble. Born in Michigan in 1860, he built a varied career in printing, grocery business, and politics, serving as Benton Harbor city treasurer and leading Alma Record with his wife Alice Moore. He leaves wife, daughter Laura, his mother, and four sisters. funeral held in Coldwater, burial there.

Alma College organizes a prohibition club as part of the Intercollegiate Prohibition Association. About 1,500 students across 200 of 450 U.S. colleges participate in a civic effort to study the liquor question and influence political action. Herman F. Johnson of Minneapolis will aid as traveling secretary. Arther McIntyre of Alma is elected president.

The Central Michigan Poultry Association met at A. R. Smith's shoe store to elect a new vice president to fill the vacancy from C. J. Brown's death. Fred Rowland won the post. Officers include M. H. Wells president L. C. Wright secretary A. R. Smith secretary show room Andy Shaw superintendent. The annual poultry show is set for January 26 to 29 with a catalogue issued beforehand. Allegan Boy Wins Carnegie Hero Fund Medal for Bravery
Charles Verne Calkins of Detroit, son of Mrs. E. Brearley, earned a bronze medal and $2,000 from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for rescuing passengers from a frightened farm horse in Allegan’s Hubbard Street runaway incident July 28, 1910. He suffered bruises but prevented injuries to Barbara Schreiber, her child, Lydia Wilson and others. The funds will aid his education as he plans to study law.

Diphtheria scare at Alma College prompts quarantine
Miss Jean Eggleston a Alma College freshman fell ill with diphtheria after class and was taken to Brainerd Hospital. Six friends were quarantined in Wright Hall as precaution. Eggleston recovered quickly and will remain in hospital fifteen days per state health order. all students received antitoxin and no contagion danger existed. About two a m Friday three Pere Marquette freight cars derailed and overturned into a ditch near the mill south of Alma. The cause is unclear but may involve something dragging from a car catching on a tie. The cars carried shelled corn, which was scattered over ground. Mr Eckert bought the loose corn. A Saginaw wrecker was called and the wreck was cleared by Saturday morning.

Thornton sells coal business to P M Smith in Davenport
The A C Thornton and Son coal business was sold by Fred Thornton to P M Smith. Smith took possession Monday morning and will not disrupt the hardware firm. He merges his small coal operation with the purchase and keeps prices and crew. Edgar Nicholson of Buffalo will manage the yards. Thorntons plan to move to Davenport, Iowa early next year.

Caple Loses Cattle to Foot and Mouth in Lucas County
A. B. Caple, a 200 acre dairy farmer near Toledo, reports his herd of 97 cows condemned after officials traced foot and mouth disease to a bull bought from a stockyards shipment from Chicago.
