Eastern Star District Meeting in St Louis Delights Members

The third Semi Annual Meeting of the District Association of Gratiot and Isabella counties Order of Eastern Star held in St Louis on Tuesday November 3 featured a full program including songs duets and a Schubert Serenade. Highlights praise for St Louis hostesses and a superb dinner. Officers elected included President Mrs Elsie Graham of Mt Pleasant and First Vice President Carl Faunce.

Bernie L. Case won the county clerk race in Gratiot County after results released this week. The election confirms Case as the top official handling records and elections for the county government.

Masonic School of Instruction Returns to St Louis

Delegates numbering about fifty from Alma attended the Masonic School of Instruction at St Louis Monday evening. A large turnout from Ithaca and other nearby places joined the gathering with Grand Lecturer Gilbert conducting. Some third degree work was shown and a banquet followed the program. An obituary and brief biographical notice recounts the life of Mr. Birmingham who died of cancer at Arcada Center after a long pioneer career in Clinton and Ovid townships. He leaves a widow, three sons, twelve grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held October 15 at his home with Rev. C Wood of Ithaca officiating.

Miss Laura Wes Hosts Halloween Party at Vaudette Hall

Autumn decorations set a Halloween mood as Miss Laura Weene entertained about thirty friends at Vaudette Hall. Jack o lanterns and a Mother Witch theme framed a night of games, candy prizes, and a supper chosen by partners via two part cards. Ruth Bennett played piano solos and guests sang. Halloween Bridge Party Hosted by Mrs George Moore

Mrs George Moore of 807 State street entertained six tables of bridge Saturday afternoon. The parlors brimmed with Halloween decorations and color. Mrs Bert Hicks won first prize and Mrs W A Bahike took second. Refreshments were served.

Republican Gains Across Michigan County Ticket Strong

The county ticket shifted Republican with Newell Bralford winning sheriff by about 50 votes. Governor Ferris carried the state by over 35,000 votes, Fordney (R) re-elected to Congress from the district, and J. A. Damon (R) won Senate in the 25th district. Alma and Bradford home precincts favored Helman and Bradford respectively, boosting party standing countywide.

Bell Brides Alma Woman at St Marys Church

Ellen Theresa Wynne and Frederick Joseph Bell were married at St Marys Church in Alma on Saturday October 31. Rev Father John Mulvey officiated with Virginia Mulvey singing. A three course breakfast followed at the bride’s mother’s home on College street. The couple will reside at the Bell farm after November 26 with many guests from Alma and surrounding towns.

Two Helens Host Halloween Party for Friends

The lawn at Ben Mindell home on Gratiot Avenue hosted a Halloween gathering Saturday night. Miss Helen Mindell and Miss Helen Pettyjohn hosted twelve mutual friends with a marshmallow roast, bonfires, games, and refreshments.

Boy on bicycle injured in Superior street collision

Russell Miller, about twelve, was hit by a motorcycle driven by Chris Eye at the Gratiot and East Superior corner. The bicycle was demolished and the boy suffered serious bruises, confined to bed under a doctor’s care. Roy Miller of the Miller?ry is mentioned in reunion notes.

About sixty women gathered at Orchard House for a joint Alma Garden and Woman's Club event recounting the Michigan State Federation of Women's Clubs Adrian convention runs Oct 20–24. Mrs. L. J. Obituary of Mrs Syrena Demaray at 77 years old

Mrs Syrena Demaray widow of Nicholas Demaray died last week at her son’s home north of Elwell. She was buried Saturday in Seville Center Cemetery with Rev Gordon and Rev Wiles officiating. She was 77 and survived by two sons Mack of Saginaw and David of Elwell and a daughter Mrs Susan Hart of Clare. A generous and kindly lady, she will be missed by friends.

Lyceum Concert A Success In Opera House

The Lyceum season opened with a three member Chicago teacher trio Edward Clarke baritone Rachel Steinman Clarke violin Earl Victor Prahl pianist. Performances included Prologue to Pagliacci Herre Kati Gray Days Out of the Night and Chopin Scherzo with strong encores. Gideon Band and Alma group funded 50 Bibles for Wright House Arcada rooms on November 3.

Halloween Dinner for 33 Ladies Aged 70 and Up

The F L Convis home on Jefferson hosted a Halloween dinner for 33 women all at least 70 years old. Guests arrived by car, wore cat and witch place cards, and jack o lantern favors filled with candy. A 14 person dining table and several at smaller tables heard a varied program including solos by Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Skinner, recitations, and poems. The combined ages totaled 2615 years.

Jolly Club Halloween Party At Walters Home

The Jolly Club met at Mr. and Mrs. Carl Walters 420 Pine Avenue for Halloween. Pedro was played, four prizes awarded, first prizes to Mrs. Carl Adams and Mr. Fred Gitkin, booby prizes to Mrs. Harry Orwig and Mr. Carl Adams. Midnight supper followed in the parlors amid ragged corn shocks and jack o'lanterns. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Carl Adams, Harry Orwig and wife, N. E. Sand and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd White, Mr. and Mrs. Verne Bamber, Mr. and Mrs. Barton Youngs, Fred Gilkin and wife, and the hosts.

Three New Prehistoric Specimens Added to Moore Collection

H C Moore reports three new pre historic finds within a week. A blue flint spear head 10.5 by 6 inches from Edmore, the largest in the collection and nearly perfect. E H Raycraft gifted an amulet found on his Alma area farm. Tom Goebel unearthed a gorget two miles north of Alma and gave it to Mr Moore in A 1 condition.
