Local campaign urges rapid entry for a fund raising contest offering two umbrella prizes to top subscribers by November 1. Prize details include a Ford car and special votes, with emphasis on weekly cash reports, persistent effort, and public display of team spirit.
The Synod of Michigan met in the First Presbyterian Church at the Soo on October 12 13 and 14. Alma College was represented by Dr Ewing and Prof Cook and Rev Bartlett presided. Rev W C Burns chaired the education committee and presented a favorable Alma College report. Alumni attending included Rev Brooks Rev Charles E Blanchard Rev Frank P Knowles Rev Morris and others.
A very pretty wedding occurred at the home of Mr Theron Kress in Sumner township on Wednesday October 27 as their daughter Ivah wed Ervin J Miller of Elkton Michigan. The interior featured a latticedbower with barberries and carnations. The bridal party entered to Mendelssohn’s wedding march. Rev George Andrews and Rev William McNutt officiated. Two songs were sung and over 100 guests attended bearing gifts. Out of town guests included William Miller Bikton Edward Miler St Charles Isaac Church Chris Church Told Hoff Clarion Bell Phelps Hillsdale Rachel Gee Edward Hannah Ithaca.
Kenneth Wolfe, a former Alma boy, led the junior championship at the Meld day in Swift Current Saskatchewan. He won the running broad jump high jump seniors kissrey juniors 100 yard dash 220 yard dash 440 yard dash and shot put junior scoring 35 points. His Alma spirit shines through in triumph.
An appeal has been filed in the County Clerk's office from the Board of Supervisors Equalization. The state tax commissioners will review the county’s district equalization under Act No 201 of 1918. If unfair, the Board of Supervisors must reconvene for re equalization and postpone duties until the Commission issues its determination.
Milas Maccabee and Mrs. Geo. Watson form a partnership and will open a first class dressmaking business on Gratiot Avenue after November 18. Both have long experience and promise success.
Mt Pleasant defeats Alma 14 to 7 in a hard fought matchup. Alma’s speed exploits and interceptions kept the game close while Mt Pleasant used strong running and a long punt return to build a first half lead. The second half produced no scoring as both sides battled evenly through the final period.
Aged 1 years, North Star township mourns the death of a longtime resident. He was brother to Mrs. Geo Pelfeey and father of A B E Kicher proprietor of the Wright House Library. Funeral services planned for Friday. he lived in the county all his life and was well known.
Ex president Taft spoke at the sixty third annual Michigan State Teachers Association convention held near Alma. Six thousand teachers attended as Alma College students and faculty joined. Taft and other leaders urged improved public school funding and federal aid for educational research and certification. The talk touched on waste, political interference, and the need for exams and surveys, with a plan for a national education bureau to aid local and state systems.
Mrs. Lewis Chase presents a Sterioptical talk on Brittany and the Breton of today secured by Alma parties. The lecture Friday evening November 7 at 7 4 p m in St John s Guild room discusses northern France war devastation and Breton refugees with color projections of a sixteenth century life. Tickets 25e.

Alma and Albion battled to a hard fought game with one touchdown by Alma’s French after a fumble return, and Albion answering late with a scoring drive capped by Riggs kick. The contest featured big plays from Alma’s Spinney and French sprints, several lead changes, and a game decided only in the final minutes.
A large appreciative crowd attended a fine concert by the Schumann Quintet at the Opera House on Wednesday evening. The performers delivered exceptionally well rendered selections led by Mr Lambert and featured a magical solo by Miss Fortune.
