Alma Cancels With Alpena On Football Schedule
Alma High School cancelled its planned football game against Alpena last Saturday after receiving a three week old notice explaining the team’s misfortune. Three Alpena players were declared completely disabled for the season after a fight with a Grand Rapids opponent, and two more were unavailable for a Bay City Eastern game. Alma, with a small enrollment and strained reserves, thus missed the honor of meeting the husky northern club, but hopes for a game next year remain.

Rev Thomas G R Brownlow and 4 A Gerhardt joined the statewide prohibition kickoff held in Lavine at the Lyon Tabernacle. President R E Scott of the Michigan Anti-Saloon League led the opening service. Notable speakers included former Congressman Richmond Pearson Holden Fred Lanc dis and Prof F B Hathaway. Pioneer Dennis E Hawes Dies After Illness Near Elm Hall
Dennis E Hawes a longtime farmer near Elm Hall Gratiot County died Monday after a three year illness. Born July 26 1848 in Newberry Geauga County Ohio he moved to Montcalm then Sumner Township later Elm Hall. He married Mina Fowler died after one year then Maggie Shaffer with whom three children were raised. Survived by wife Maggie two sisters and two brothers among extended kin. Services were held at his home and interment near Vertis cemetery.

Resident of Alma Dies After Prolonged Illness
Charles C. Bartles of Alma died at his Prospect Street home at 6 00 p m Monday November 8th after eight months of illness due to anaemia. Born May 18 1841 in Michigan he lived 84 years five months and 23 days. He leaves a wife three children one son and two daughters one brother. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church November 10 with Rev We Privat officiating and interment in Riverside Cemetery.

Mr and Mrs HB Stuckey attended the wedding of their niece Lotie Moore to Stanley E Putney of Grand Rapids last Friday in New Haven township. The Havana Cigar Company and Odd Fellows rooms suffered heavy losses, with insurance partial or insufficient.
