Local contest divides Alma City as one district and all other territory as the second. Contestants must turn in the largest subscription totals by November 17 to win prizes including two silver knife and fork sets. A ten percent commission is offered for weekly reports.

Christmas Tree Committee Recommends Continued Xmas Tree

The February committee that studied continuing the Community Xmas Tree met at the Wright House Parlors. They favored last year’s arrangement, discussed modifications, and appointed people to gather tree and evergreen pricing. A public meeting is set for November 17 at Wright House Parlors, inviting last year’s committees.

Alma Grain & Lumber wins state tuberculosis sanatorium wiring contract

Alma Grain and Lumber Company secures the contract to wire the new State Tuberculosis Sanitarium at Howell Michigan. Manager Medler sends Peter Maloy to oversee the project. Two new buildings are being added to the institution with Henry Soule handling erection of the two buildings.

Alma Cancels With Alpena On Football Schedule

Alma High School cancelled its planned football game against Alpena last Saturday after receiving a three week old notice explaining the team’s misfortune. Three Alpena players were declared completely disabled for the season after a fight with a Grand Rapids opponent, and two more were unavailable for a Bay City Eastern game. Alma, with a small enrollment and strained reserves, thus missed the honor of meeting the husky northern club, but hopes for a game next year remain.

Prohibition Campaign Opens With Rally in Lavine

Rev Thomas G R Brownlow and 4 A Gerhardt joined the statewide prohibition kickoff held in Lavine at the Lyon Tabernacle. President R E Scott of the Michigan Anti-Saloon League led the opening service. Notable speakers included former Congressman Richmond Pearson Holden Fred Lanc dis and Prof F B Hathaway. A banquet followed at the Masonic temple with Henry R Pattengill as toastmaster and addresses from leaders from Lansing Detroit Battle Creek and other cities.

Harry Rockwell announces a contract to Wm Nordola of Grand Rapids for a brick building at 26288 feet with fireproof design. The lower floor will host a modern movie hall with enameled brick front and full utilities. The upper floor features two offices and a large back hall. the old building moves to River Avenue for a two family flat.

Pioneer Dennis E Hawes Dies After Illness Near Elm Hall

Dennis E Hawes a longtime farmer near Elm Hall Gratiot County died Monday after a three year illness. Born July 26 1848 in Newberry Geauga County Ohio he moved to Montcalm then Sumner Township later Elm Hall. He married Mina Fowler died after one year then Maggie Shaffer with whom three children were raised. Survived by wife Maggie two sisters and two brothers among extended kin. Services were held at his home and interment near Vertis cemetery.

Resident of Alma Dies After Prolonged Illness

Charles C. Bartles of Alma died at his Prospect Street home at 6 00 p m Monday November 8th after eight months of illness due to anaemia. Born May 18 1841 in Michigan he lived 84 years five months and 23 days. He leaves a wife three children one son and two daughters one brother. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church November 10 with Rev We Privat officiating and interment in Riverside Cemetery.

Stuckey Family Attends New Haven Wedding

Mr and Mrs HB Stuckey attended the wedding of their niece Lotie Moore to Stanley E Putney of Grand Rapids last Friday in New Haven township. The ceremony was at the home of the bride’s parents Mr and Mrs A P Moore, performed by Rev Robinson of Middlebury. The bride is a popular New Haven resident and the groom is a bookkeeper for Birwell Sweeper Co of Grand Rapids. They will live in Grand Rapids.

Fire Sweeps Odd Fellows Building and Nearby Homes

Last Friday at about 2210 a blaze destroyed the 10, U. F. building beside the Byers blacksmith shop. The Havana Cigar Company and Odd Fellows rooms suffered heavy losses, with insurance partial or insufficient. The Byers home and shop were badly damaged, others nearby exposed to heat and water. fire spread through the inner structure before discovery, firefighters battling the flames for hours.
