PUMP ENGINE RECOMMENDED FOR THE CITY

A report by the Michigan Inspection Bureau urges fire department and waterworks upgrades in Alma. It recommends an automatic motor triple combination hose chemical and pumping engine of at least 600 gallons per minute at 120 pounds, with scaled capacities at higher pressures, plus reinforced water mains and a second motor driven pumper. The plan aims to raise Alma from class four to three, cutting insurance rates over years and improving fire protection citywide.

Kent County Joins Dairy Alfalfa Campaigns

Kent County will host a two week Dairy Alfalfa campaign starting November 6 under Michigan Agricultural College auspices. It will be the second county in the state to undertake intensive campaign work this fall after Clinton County finished a similar drive. Local barnyard meetings at least three to four miles from farms mark the program which aims at more efficient dairying and increased alfalfa acreage.

Presbyterian Brotherhood Plans Fall Banquet Series

The Presbyterian Brotherhood outlines its fall and winter activities starting with a banquet at eight o clock with Judge Edward J. Moinet of St. Johns as the main speaker. International Egg Contest at M A C East Lansing

The first Michigan Agricultural College International Egg Laying Contest opens at East Lansing with entries from foreign countries and many U S states. One hundred pens host Leghorns Rocks Reds Wyandottes Orpingtons and other breeds as six new poultry houses ready the event aims to set official stock records and reveal costs and production figures for poultry economics. Par-Kar Conch Business Shows Good Increase

Par-Kar Coach Company, based at the Bell atrom plant in St Louis, has expanded from a small staff to over 100 workers in under three months. The firm reports strong demand for its Par-Kar product, delivering trucks and jobs to Michigan Transportation Company and a Toronto rolling store operator. Petition Seeks Pavement on East Downie Street

Residents and property owners on East Divense Street, Netweer State ette, and Pine Avenue filed a petition Tuesday asking the city to pave the street. The request was referred to the city engineer to prepare plans and estimate costs, with the aim to submit the project in spring. Fires in the Week Consume Homes and Mourning Effects

Two fires occurred this week with rapid response by the fire department. One house on Ward Street suffered a blaze likely from an overheated furnace, causing substantial but not total damage. The Carlyle Hawley residence on 805 Lincoln Avenue saw a loss estimated under 200,000 dollars, with flames starting in the basement and moving upward.
