The base bears the line They gave the last measure of devotion to their country, with Liberty and Union above. A G A R emblem and eagle crown the shaft. The unveiling will occur on Decoration Day.

Roy Whitman Dies After Illness On May 21
Roy Whitman born December 25, 1862 in Ionia County grew up in Portland and married Carrie Barton in 1894. They moved to a Rogers farm near Alam seven years ago, where four children were born. two died in infancy. He passed away Thursday in Ann Arbor after a critical operation, with funeral held at home and graveside services by the Masons, Wright Chartette singing. He was aModern Woodmen of America and Grange member, mourned as a kind husband and father and loyal neighbor by a grateful community.
