Monument Unveiled For Soldier and Sailors at Alma

In a solemn ceremony the granite shaft at Alma is unveiled by the Womans Relief Corps and the Wm. Meyer Post to honor courageous men and valiant deeds. The address recalls liberty, union, and the cost of freedom, urging dedication to preserving self government and peace, with Lincoln and other figures cited.

Banquet Honors Prof Ellsworth and Family

Prof. and Mrs. F. E. Ellsworth and daughter Ruth were guests of honor at a Saturday banquet hosted by the public school teachers. The event featured a four course meal in the high school domestic science room, decorated with flags, small flags, red and white candles, and spiraea. A leather upholstered chair was presented to Mr. Ellsworth, and Mrs. Ellsworth received a silver fork while Ruth got a silver spoon.

Mrs Ada Yerington of New York City, a former Alma resident, is visiting Mrs F Brown this week. Prof Tieg and Mrs Anna Hamilton of Shepherd were entertained by Mrs Edna Kelly Sunday. Miss Elizabeth Smith attended the Notre Dame Junior Hop in South Bend Indiana Monday evening.

Republican ward caucuses in Alma Michigan set for Monday June today at 7:40 p m local time at City Hall First Ward, Second Ward location near Express office, Third Ward at Hotel Arcada Heading room, Fourth Ward at Wright House. INNIS TOURN: Alma, Olivet Tennis Sets Split

Alma College and Olivet split day events in the district tennis meet with Alma winning girls singles and doubles, and Olivet taking boys singles and doubles. Miss Cook swept singles 6–0 6–2 over Miss Packard. Cook and Ritter won girls doubles 6–2 6–3. Boys saw Lancaster defeat Cole 6–1 6–0. Cole and Highy lost to Knapp and Lancaster 6–4 2–6 6–3. Intercollegiate finals set for Albion June 5–6. Rev Mason and Father Mulvey presided.

Memorial Day Observance by O. F. Lodge Remembrance Service

The O F Memorial Day Lodge plans a Sunday observance with Rebekah, K P, Pythian Sisters, Modern Woodmen and Royal Neighbor Lodges invited. Members will meet at their halls, march to the Methodist church at two o'clock for a service by Rev. T G Brownlow, with Wrights Quartet singing, then proceed to Riverside Cemetery to decorate graves of deceased members.

Memorial Day Address at Alma Opera House

Memorial Day in Alma featured an address by Hon Perry Powers of Cadillac at the Opera House. The forenoon included cemetery decorates by G A R and W I C members. The program opened with a prayer by Rev W H Mason, recitations, music by C W Davies and Wright Male Quartette, then closing prayers by Rev T G R Brownlow. Senator and MP King traveled to Saginaw with Miss Beroy, sister of Mr King, after a week in Alma. Mrs John Chick visited Elsie with Mr and Mrs John Grater.

Tug of War Showdown Between Fresh Sophomores

A lively tug of war on Monday ended with the Freshmen victorious after a fast start before the signal. The larger, steadier Seniors pulled the younger group downhill, using a knoll for leverage, while Sophomores sacrificed to keep the water clean for the citizens of St Lewis. A good crowd observed the spirited contest.

Methodist Notes Church Services and Activities

The Methodist Episcopal Church led by Rev. Thomas G. R. Brownlow held Sunday services at 9 A M with a Love Feast and at 11 A M for preaching, with the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper and Baptismal Service. New members were to be received. Epworth League meetings and a special service for youth were noted, along with a Thursday prayer meeting and quarterly conference in the vestry.

Fire at Laycock Home Causes Minor Damage

A woodshed fire at the Laycock residence southwest of Alma occurred Sunday morning between ten and eleven. The daughter alerted neighbors. the blaze was quickly controlled with damage under ten dollars. Officials attributed the start to a worm nest burned from an apple tree nearby. Residents thanked Alma citizens and neighbors for speedy help. Dr. Blaisdell of Alma College preached at the Presbyterian church in St. Louis last Sunday.

DEDIGATORY EXERCISES MARK NEW Pythian Halls Opening

Knights of Pythias Fitz James lodge hosts dedicatory exercises for a rebuilt Potlasky hall. A large crowd toured the new Castle Hall with dining rooms capable of 73 plus, kitchen, club room with billiards, and social spaces. Officers, addresses, music, and a mayoral talk highlighted the evening, followed by refreshments and dancing.

In 1914 students at Harvard Cambridge campus Wisconsin State University and others join a nationwide temperance effort. Wright Hall Open House Inspires Visitors and Japanese Sketch

Last Saturday evening Wright Hall hosted an annual open house for metrevetor and student residents. Attendees toured all rooms, viewed a Japanese chalet sketch, and enjoyed a Japanese Sword Song by Prof. Ro Veately followed by refreshments on the grounds and stall-table setups.

Miss Mabel Keene and Merritt B. Miller were secretly married last Thursday in Saginaw by the First Methodist pastor. Both are Alma High School graduates and members of the current class. The union surprised their friends and parents who learned of it upon the couple’s return from Bay City.

Alma Defeats Alma High in 1914 Gratiot Baseball Final

Alma loses the county championship to St Louis after a 10th inning finish. Ithaca was eliminated, with two losses to Alma and one to St Louis. The Alma team prepares for the county track meet on June 12 as locals send greetings and report changes in residents and upcoming events.

Smith Daugherty Wedding in Crystal Ceremony

Miss Ida Smith of Crystal and Chay Daugherty of Warren Ohio married at the bride’s parents home in Crystal by Rev Lyons at seven Tuesday morning. The bride wore white messaline and carried white roses. maid Ethel Smith wore green crepe de chine with pink roses. Reynolds Smith served as rug bearer. Mrs Daugherty a former Alma student. Mr Daugherty a Warren machinist. They plan to live in Warren after a trip and honeymoon, then visit Saginaw and Detroit.
