Twenty Will Graduate at Alma College

The thirty fourth commencement at Alma College opens with a farewell service June 12 at First Presbyterian. June 15 awards honor diplomas to twenty seniors and state teaching certificates to fifteen Kindergarten graduates. New Trial Sought for Collins in Crowe Murder Case

Oscar Collins convicted of the February murder of Ellen Crowe faced Judge Moinet as a new trial motion stalled by lack of time. Memorial Day Observed in Alma with Morning Exercises

Memorial Day will be fittingly observed in Alma on Monday May 30 with a strong program. Rev Ames A Maywood of Cass Avenue Methodist Church Detroit will deliver the address. For the first time in years the exercises will be in the morning at the Strand theatre at 10 00 a m. A parade will form in front of the theatre and proceed to the cemetery.

Construction of a 20-crypt Mausoleum in Riverside Cemetery

The Flowers Construction Company of Toledo has begun laying the ground work for a 20-crypt mausoleum to be erected this summer at Riverside cemetery. With most materials on site, foundation work has started and the $65,000 structure is expected to be completed by early September.

Local Music Composer Frank TF Smith Plans New Works

In stressful times Frank TF Smith, a local music proprietor, has become a composer. He is finishing three new pieces slated for future release, including My Dear Old Southern Home and Cosmos Flowers. A sheet music version and phonograph records are planned, with 3 000 copies to be issued.

Reservoir Work Expands City Water Tank Capacity

The planned concrete reservoir for the pure water system near Waterworks park will be about 200 000 gallons larger than first planned. Sand under the surface requires extending the excavation depth three feet six inches to provide a solid foundation, increasing capacity by roughly one fifth. The additional depth will raise capacity and prevent future cracking of the tank.

County Athletes Prep For Friday Track Meet

Athletes of Gratiot County will compete here in a two class track and field meet hosted by the Gratiot County Athletic Association. The program opens at 9:00 a.m. with preliminaries and a county baseball tournament for Class A and B. Alma faces Middleton for Class A honors while Pompeii and North will contest Class B. Finals follow after lunch, with Medals awarded to event winners. Coach Edwin Stevie of Alma College will lead the meet. De Luxe Candy Co. promotes opening day with music and flowers.

Vestaburg Blaze Destroys Multiple Buildings Sunday

A major fire in Vestaburg started ~1 40 am at the Emery Howard store and spread to the Dewitt Murtaugh building McDole barber shop and a Caris shed and barn destroying both structures and causing heavy losses. Firefighters contained the flames and prevented further damage. Also mentioned is a lecture by Walton Hubbard of Los Angeles on Christian Science at the I O O F ball on Sunday afternoon May 29 to which the public is invited.

Alon Tax Rate Falls Amid Higher Valuation and Sugar Plant

Alon faces a reduced tax rate of 11.05 per thousand as the city’s valuation rises to 13,795,063 despite dull business. The Michigan Sugar Alma plant pays taxes on about 250,000 worth of sugar now on hand. The city budget shrinks to 156,888.43 from 174,400.70, aided by Ward valuations showing large real estate and personal property totals.

Arcada Pioneer Henry Clark Dies After Brief Illness

Arcada township farmer Henry Clark aged 77 died Tuesday after a short illness following a trip to Alma. Funeral at his son H. B. Clark’s Arcada residence today at 1 30 p m Rev Gelaton officiating. Burial at Sumner. Survived by son H B Clark of Arcada and another son in Oregon.

Cavalry Unit for Alma City Seems Assured

A Michigan National Guard troop in Alma appears likely as over a hundred residents apply for enlistment. A September inspection by Adjutant General Bersey is planned with examinations under way led by Dr Charles F. Dubois. The unit would form Troop H of the 8th Cavalry Michigan National Guard, with a drill field proposed in the eastern city and equipment including six Browning machine guns, rifles, pistols, sabers, a motor truck, and horses shipped from Texas or Kansas remount stations.
