Alma considers Michigan National Guard cavalry troop

Alma may host a Michigan National Guard cavalry unit if at least fifty men commit by June 30. The Chamber of Commerce and local leaders push the plan, noting 42 horses and setup costs that could total 12 000 to 16 000 dollars annually. A Monday meeting at 7 30 p m in the American Legion rooms invites interested county men to join drill-ready volunteers.

John W Morton Dies Frid ay in Alma Area

John W Morton died Friday at about 3 am west of Alma of paralysis after long residence in Gratoit county. Funeral from the home with Rev Willis Gulston officiating, burial at River silo cemetery with Masonic ceremony. Survived by wife, two daughters Mrs H F Withey and Mrs H J Wickman, sister Mrs Jennie Hilliker, brother Mr Janes B Morton. Oddfellow lodge escorted remains to the cemetery.

Alma College Receives Major Pledge and Endowment Gift

Mi Mi Creeks of Alma College announced a pledge of 850000 to the Alma College Endowment Fund and 200000 to be raised from other sources since January 1, 1920. President Crooks said the gift is from a first-time donor and could not reveal the donor’s name.

Pupils of Misa J. Yerrington entertained Tuesday evening at Mrs. We Knudson’s home. Several will enter the state high school contest in Mt Pleasant this week where numbers like Requiem, Jean, Witches Dance, My Mother Bids Me Bind My Hair, Meditation, One Fine Day and Down in Dewey Dell will be performed. Commission Form Discussed as Alma Delegation Visits Midland

Last Friday afternoon ten members of the Alma Chamber of Commerce including Mayor Murphy and Manager Reynolds visited Midland. In the community building that evening both men spoke on the commission form of government, manager plan, following a tour of Rowe chemical works where Mr. Howe cited water pumping and fourteen miles of railroad as notable company facts. The visit included a look at Mr. Bowe’s home and the beauty parade, and the building’s upkeep by police subscription, with a large auditorium and athletic grounds. Reynolds faced rapid questions from Midland residents eager for knowledge on the commission form. The Midland enthusiasm for the plan showed strong civic interest and pride. Watch for our opening. Salvation Army drive urged in Gratiot County

Michigan campaign continues with Gratiot County only half the 4000 dollar quota raised. Two days remain Friday and Saturday as cleanup efforts by Alma business leaders and an American Legion committee press to hit the goal. Also notes the death of Normin Coffin of Elm Hall born September 11, 1857 and funeral at Brainerd hospital.

Annual Exhibit To Be Held Soon At Alma Public Schools

Alma Public Schools announce their annual exhibit to showcase manual training and science work. The event runs Thursday and Friday, June 2 and 3, in the school gym, featuring work from manual training with large displays, talking machines, ships models, and more. Guilty verdict in Ithaca murder trial shocks few observers

Oscar Collins was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of Ellen Crowe, a 28 year old Alma mother, whose strangulation near her doorstep on February 5 prompted a ten day trial before Judge Moinet in Circuit Court at Ithaca. The jury deliberated about three hours after 11:15 a.m charge, and Collins faces life imprisonment at Marquette or Jackson.
