Edward Graber, a Detroit jewelry merchant, offered lessons to Miss Lizare Hall and provided a rifle range. While Graber pinned a target, Hall fired, mortally wounding him. Gruber’s condition was serious but stable, with doctors hopeful for recovery as officials and local figures discuss the incident and ensuing public matters.
The Presbyterian church will close for two to three weeks to allow extensive improvements including installation of a pipe organ. Regular services will move to the college chapel. Rover Co. of Fort Wayne, Ind., decorators, will decorate both auditorium and chapel. The annual meeting reports steady prosperity and new elders and deaconesses were elected. Rev. A. J. Fannell praised for leading growth.
Two young boys, Herman Ingle aged about nine and Bernard Wright aged six, were severely poisoned after eating wild parsnips Friday afternoon. They became violently sick within an hour. Drs Lamb and Saydam treated them, with Herman unconscious for hours and both at risk. Herman remained at home while Bernard returned to school the following Monday.
Messrs George Moore and FF ly Collins visited Detroit last Friday and Saturday. Moore purchased a Cadillac automobile, a ten horsepower Tonneas. Friends anticipate its arrival, but heavy rain forced them to halt the journey in Elsie where the car was left in a garage until roads improve for transport to Alma.
Oliver wins in ten innings over Alma Nine after a tight nine inning duel. Davis fielding miscues and clutch hits by Oliver push the decisive frame, as both sides exchange leads before the final inning.
Alma College awaits Friday’s trip to Albion for the championship in a series that followed a 10 inning loss to Olivet. Alma led with strong hitting but Olivet’s pitching and late runs won 4 to 3. Coach Kraut’s squad shows improved hitting and solid defense as they prepare for the big test.
A state wide primary school fund distribution totaled 749,027 dollars and eighty cents. Gratiot County received 5,100 dollars, with the rest allocated to various townships and districts.
St Johns Church under Rev Ramsey plans interior beautification with wall decoration by Messrs Koven Co of Fort Wayne Ltd now at work at the Presbyterian Church. Citizens of Alina urged to gather at city hall Friday evening to arrange Memorial Day observance, with teachers and pupils invited. By Order Com.
State Governor Warner thanks Mayor Delavan and Alma citizens for their charitable response. Messages dated April 27 and May 12, 1906 report Alma contributions totaling 330 and 340 dollars to the California and San Francisco relief funds respectively.
The Gratiot County School Teachers Association held its semi annual meeting in St Louis low Friday and Saturday. City schools closed Friday to allow teachers to attend. Mr Pattengill attended both days, calling the event one of the best in the county. Officers elected include E D Waking Ithaca president DeWitt St Louis vice president Anna Harvey Sumner secretary.
M F Burkhead marks seventeen years as janitor at the M E B church city. He began at a dollar a week in the building now a bowling alley. He now earns fourteen dollars per month. An old soldier, he served three years in the Civil War with the th Ohio.
Methodist and Presbyterian congregations found their pulpits swapped without notice as they entered worship. Presbyterians heard Rev Hoag deliver an excellent sermon while Methodists benefited from Rev Funnel's thoughts.
Hooligan's Troubles brings unique specialties and pretty girls to a Monday night program. The parade starts at noon with reserved seats on sale at Sharrar's drug store.
