A letter from Mas B. F. Tomson of Cadillac Michigan asks if former neighbors in Gratiot County are still there or have died or moved. He lists numerous residents near Alma and Townsend and asks about Frank James’s grave in Townsend cemetery, climate, health, and crops compared to 28 years ago, offering repayment for information.
The Post Office Department announces an approved adjustment to rural free delivery carriers' salaries effective July 1. James Norman King of Pairgrove Michigan has accepted the assistant pastorate at the New York Avenue Reformed Church in Washington. A former Alma College student, he was active as a debater and Phi Phi Alpha founder. He served as president of the College Athletic Association in his senior year.
The Fulton News of Perrinton reports J. G. Candes sold the Perrinton elevator to Alma Elevator Co. of Alma. Me Carnes will stay in Perrinton and manage Perrinton beer interests. Alma Elevator Co. will buy grain hay wool and continue coal market. Im er Davis remains to oversee local interests.
The new city band, led by Director and Solo Trombonist Robt. DeLacey, performs tomorrow evening on the street. The roster lists F Bennet Jas Ostrander, F Frosch, F Garget, Harry Orwig, M Medier, R Frosch, Geo Latimer, W Medier, D Vought, D M Culp, C Ainsley, Wi Davie, G Gonguer, with more as yet unable to play. A first class clarinet melophone cornet and saxophone will soon be added.
Mt. Pleasant Enterprise notes Farmers' Co-Operative Creamery Co. bought 98 of 180 Isabelle County Creamery Company shares, gaining control and severing three directors. Likely only one creamery will run this season as competition from Owosso Alum and Saginaw heats up. Manager Hontone believes the county farmers will keep milk local.
A Pomona Grange meeting is announced for May 25 with open public attendance. Lecturers from Pomona and Arcada Granges will discuss duties of women’s work, education as applied to the Grange, and civic and rural improvement. Music by local granges and readings by Mrs. Jennie Crozier are listed, with state overseer N. P. Hull and others speaking on farmer family opportunities.
Harper's Nine comes to the front as Florida delivers a 20 to victory in a game noted for its decisive finish. The report frames a straightforward win with emphasis on the team effort and key contributions.
Alma College baseball team trimmed Olivet 10 to 1 with 23 hits led by Melmer Hill Campbell Duncanson and Deering. Duncanson struck out eight, Helmer made a cleanup catch, Campbell slid out on a close call, and Umpire Hall officiated. Michigan may visit Alma next Saturday boosting fan turnout.
On May 1, students at Wright Hall witnessed a prank when two objects were suspended on a telephone wire a stick with tied shot and light chibs and a placard with suggestive statements. A telephone man retrieved the items during chapel week remarks and students chased him playfully. Six fire proof doors were hung in the Opera House block last Thursday to control flames in a fire. Doors vary in size and are supported by a tram with a 20 degree plant, lowered by ropes with weights and a metal bar that melts at 643 degrees to trigger rapid closure. The Standard Fire Proof Co of Saginaw supplied the system used in Alpena and Alma Realty Co estimated costs around 400 dollars. the Sugar Co also contracted for protection in its warehouse.
Mayor King announces new appointments during Monday evening session with council approval. City officials say the moves streamline operations and align with budget priorities.
City council confirmed by unanimous vote the appointive officers for the year including John Greig as street commissioner, B C Retton as city marshal, Robert Smith as deputy marshal, KE Lanich as health officer, and Pal Ingleman as dog warden. Water Board proposed four shut off valves along the Superior street main to allow partial city shutdowns during repairs. Water main extensions were approved to Alma Manufacturing Co’s plant. John D Spinney urged civic improvements and street cleaning, with the health committee led by Prof A Cook to act and meet today to finalize action.
The Gratiot County Odd Fellows Mutual Benefit Association met at the Odd Fellows Temple on May eve ning and elected officers for the ensuing year. Organized in Alma on March 1, it provides burial funds for members and requires good standing with a local lodge. There have been no assessments for two years and the 150-member group charges a $1.50 fee. Alma College and Mt Pleasant Normal Hall Mt Pleasant argue May 10 at 8 pm on compulsory arbitration powers to settle employer employee disputes. Normal makes first debate with another institution. Alma brings strong debating tradition and will send students and faculty by special train. Judges include Prof Hedrick Iowa? and Judge Searle Ithaca and A Lacy Clare. Admission 25 cents. Courier.
About twenty ladies met in the Wright House parlor last Thursday to form the Woman's Civic Improvement League. Officers elected include President Mrs Capie, Vice President Mrs W. S. Turck, Secretary Mrs J N Baker, and Treasurer Mrs Eli Hrewbaker. A constitution committee was named and a follow up meeting scheduled for next Friday afternoon. The group aims to clean and beautify the city and hopes higher attendance at the next gathering.
Linol Edward Thompson died at Beathards hospital on a Wednesday evening aged fifteen years four months. Cause was acute appendicitis after an operation the prior night. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Geo B Thompson and leaves a sober cheerful farm boy known for hard work. Funeral held at Thompson home last Saturday afternoon officiated by Rev Williams of St Johns church with burial at Riverside Cemetery.
Early Saturday residents across Ray City gathered trash furniture and other insalible items to their front yards for removal. Street commissioner Northrup directed about a dozen teams working all day hauling the debris away.

The Alma Opera House changes hands to Alia Realty Co. with Ben McCullough named manager. Brown & Sartor, who previously hosted quality entertainments, depart, and supporters anticipate strong shows under new proprietors and manager.

Mrs Lenora Hood longtime Alma resident died Tuesday after a week of illness with pleurisy at age 73 She was born in Ohio in 184? and came to Gratiot County in 1871 She leaves husband R Hood and three children two of whom died earlier Services postponed until Friday afternoon for distant mourners and church attendance notes
In Justice Chadwick's court last Friday Dudley Parks of Riverdale faced assault and battery charges from Mallory for Elwell. A jury of six sworn members found Parks not guilty after deliberations lasting about an hour.
The Arcade Farmers Club gathered at John Fink's for April. Discussion focused on a farmers line and securing it soon, with a three member committee to consult the Sumner club. A question from the box asked if churned cream yields butter. several women replied it would not. Next meeting set for May 25, '80 at Henry Stadleberger's to avoid Decoration Day, with a program including songs, invocations, recitations, and music by club members.
Mere Id and Birton Gee two progressive farmers of Sumner township have completed a fine piece of turnpike in front of their farms. The work reflects credit on the section and suggests more farmers joining in, as the region would benefit from such public-spirited labor and improved rural access.
A small gathering of Miss Mayme Hayes' young Indy friends surprised her at her Michigan Avenue home Monday night. The farewell marked her departure to teach English and preaching at Lowell High School. There was good cheer and light refreshments.
Mite Philip O Moyle of six miles north of the city dropped dead at the breakfast table this morning after no prior illness. A fuller obituary will appear in the next issue.
