Republican caucuses held across city wards last Thursday

Republican caucuses in four wards produced full slates. First Ward elected officers and delegates to city and county conventions. Second Ward chose chair and ticket including supervisor and aldermen with delegates. Third Ward listed nominees for supervisor alderman and other posts. Fourth Ward named chair, secretary, ticket, delegates, and ward committee.

Democratic City Mass Convention in Alma Michigan

Democratic city mass convention will meet at Alma City Hall on Saturday March 24 1912 at 7 30 p m to nominate city and ward tickets for the coming election and to transact other legal business. Dr FE Lamb surprised by ten friends at his State street home with toast and poem by Mrs George Sharrar. Emerson Clark of Wheeler was in the city Wednesday.

MRS. PEARL THOMAS Died at Brainerd Hospital After Illness

Pearl Epler Thomas, born February 9 1893, died at Brainerd hospital on Monday March 18 after ten weeks of illness. She married Otis Thomas December 17 1908 in Marehest and lived in Greenville and South Haven. Survived by husband, two children Floyd age two and Lilian ten weeks, her parents Samuel and Beatrice Epler, sister Beatrice, and brother Boyd. Funeral today at 2:00 pm at her parents home. Rev Doty to officiate. interment Riverside cemetery.

St Patrick's Dance by Alma Orchestra at Woodman Hall

The Alma Orchestra hosted a delightful St Patrick's party at Woodman Hall last Friday with green and white decor and moonlight waltzes. Over forty couples attended as guests received white silk roses and clay pipes as favors, making the evening a marked success.

Decree team of FiteJames lodge visits St Louis

The decree team of Fite and James lodge traveled to St Louis to confer the third rank on twelve members. Nine candidates came from Fite James lodge and three from St Louis lodge. The work received high praise from St Louis Lodge. A banquet followed with toasts and acknowledgments. Thirty five members accompanied the team despite bad weather.

Postmaster H E Hardy Found Dead in Big Rapids

Hiram E. Hardy aged sixty eight, postmaster at Big Rapids for seventeen years and newly reappointed for four, was found dead in bed Friday at five by his wife. Civil War veteran, he moved from Fond du Lac Wisconsin to Big Rapids in 1870 and ran a meat and lumber business for two decades. A prominent Republican, he served on the county committee this year and held his post since the Harrison administration aside from a Cleveland interval.

Death of Mrs Bildson a former Alma resident

News reports the death of Margaret Billson at Walkerton Ontario. Born Margaret McElroy in London Ontario she married Thomas Bildson and with her son George moved to Alma. Survived by four sons and two daughters with interment in Hanover Ontario.

Local man charged after axe attack over pole dispute

Class B. Cook of Lafayette township, 72, arrested for assault with intent to do great bodily harm. He is out on 2000 dollars bond. The incident stemmed from pole placement for a farmers telephone line. Hopkins, president of the local telephone company, was injured. Prosecutor Goggin expects trial in the April term.

Porter Sells Jewelry Stock to Huntoon in Major Deal

Gil Porter sold his jewelry stock and business to George Huntoon of St Louis last Friday. Huntoon, linked with W. T. Green in St Louis jewelry trade, took possession last Saturday and plans to stock the finest goods. G. T. Porter, in business twenty six years, pioneered an eye testing optical device and a violin seasoning process. He will devote time to growing optical business and violin work.

Good Tax Collector Shows Strong Ar cada Township Return

The total tax collection for Ar cada township in 191? reached about 12900 dollars. Township Treasurer Kuhl man kept nearly all, missing 170 dollars that included dog tax and realty. A strong showing for the Ar cada treasurer.

Dr. Day Returns From Detroit Postgraduate Study

Dr. and Mrs. J M Day returned Monday evening after four months in Detroit where he completed a postgraduate course at Detroit College of Medicine. He worked as an assistant to Dr A H Steinbacher at St Marys Hospital and plans a brief stay in Alma before moving to their summer home at Soughton Lake. Dr Steinbacher recently returned from Germany and now holds the professorship of internal medicine at Detroit College of Medicine. Day regards the instruction as highly valuable.

High School Oratory Winners Shine in State Contest

John Ludwick won the High school oratorical contest with The Mormon Menace. Calvin Rae took second with The Unrest of Labor. Charles Dutt led in the declamation with The American Flag, Glenn Bockwell second. Russell Gaffney placed third in Webster's Reply to Hayne. Judges noted record-strong performances and close marks. Leaders credited with improving the program under Supt Ellsworth and Principal Ward. The next district contest aims to be held April 6 with schools west to Big Rapids and Cadillac north.
