Alma High School to Host Oratorical Contest Monday
An oratorical contest at Alma High School auditorium on Monday at 2 45 pm will select a rep for the sub district Michigan Oratorical association contest in Elsie Clinton Co on April 5. Five contestants are Donald Blaisdell Carl De Witt Esther Horton Cathryn Shellbass and Helen Tann. Admission is five cents to fund travel for the winner. Judges are Miss Cora Dunlap Mr Hiram Moore and Rev Frank Jackson. Also announced is construction of a new First State Bank building in the open court west of the Wright House to be completed by September 1 with a two story structure featuring an Agricultural Room a directoral room and a modern ventilating system and reinforced concrete vaults.

Saginaw firm lands contract to repair Superior Street Bridge
At a Friday night city council meeting Continental Bridge Co of Saginaw won a 1250 contract to creosote cover the East Superior Street bridge. Work will begin after steel beams arrive with completion by April 20 and a rebuilt approach including multi layer tar and sand coverings.

DORN A WRG DIES IN GRIAT COUNTY PROBATE JUDGE
John R. Wright aged eighty five years and twenty three days died at the home of his niece Mrs. Rockwell at Grant and Center streets. He served four years as Judge of Probate in Alger county and later spent much time in Idaho before moving twenty years ago to Gratiot county where he lived with Mrs. Rockwell. A kindly old gentleman with a wide circle of friends, funeral services were held at Mrs. Rockwell's home on Tuesday.

John Andrew Todd born August 29 1885 in Columbia County Ohio moved with family to Neston Ohio married Anna Miller then Eliza beth Sell. He died March 11 1916 in Ithaca aged 59 years 6 months 12 days leaving a widow and seven children. Funeral held with Rev R Ly McLain officiating. burial in Ithaca cemetery.

Townsend Ely Back from New Mexico and California Trip
Townsend Ely returned to Alma on March 10 after nearly six months away visiting his son and enjoying warmer climates. He spent four months in Deming and Santa Fe New Mexico and almost two months in Los Angeles California. Ely notes his son Ralph is becoming a prominent New Mexico figure and potential governor with broad support. Ralph serves as receiver for the New Mexico Central railroad and previously directed the Republican Party in the state. Ely formerly held Michigan offices including State Highway Commissioner and two terms as State Senator. He stayed at the Rosalind Hotel in Los Angeles and found hotel rates reasonable, with travel health good and his spirits high on returning home.
