Alma High School to Host Oratorical Contest Monday

An oratorical contest at Alma High School auditorium on Monday at 2 45 pm will select a rep for the sub district Michigan Oratorical association contest in Elsie Clinton Co on April 5. Five contestants are Donald Blaisdell Carl De Witt Esther Horton Cathryn Shellbass and Helen Tann. Admission is five cents to fund travel for the winner. Judges are Miss Cora Dunlap Mr Hiram Moore and Rev Frank Jackson. Also announced is construction of a new First State Bank building in the open court west of the Wright House to be completed by September 1 with a two story structure featuring an Agricultural Room a directoral room and a modern ventilating system and reinforced concrete vaults.

County Bean Growers Organize at Ithaca

A county organization for bean growers was formed at Ithaca last Monday. Elected officers include President C A Dibbie, Vice President A T Dibbie, and Secretary Treasurer J B Miller. Alpha Theta and Zeta Sigma Host Dual Social Night

Last Saturday in Wright Hall the Alpha Theta literary society hosted Zeta Sigma while the Philomathean Society entertained Phi Phi Alpha. Readings by Papworth Blaindell Beyer Robinson McCloy Lodwig complemented fruit salad and coffee served by hostesses with Mina Waite as chaperone. FP Brown and associates attended the Michigan Press Association convention in Grand Rapids where J McCall was reelected treasurer.

Union meeting drew hundreds to Tabernacle under FE Loose

A great Union meeting at the Tabernacle led by FE P Loose attracts over four hundred attendees. His sermons and the large Chorus choir under Prof Haldor Liljenas energize nightly gatherings. Alma High and Alma College Night performances, men only address, and multi-night sessions fuse into a broad campaign with meetings for women and various groups through the week.

An inspection by a University of Michigan examiner led to Alma high school being continued on the accredited list for three years. Superintendent A F Schulte praised the staff for maintaining high standards in public education.

Smith Wins Prohibition Oratorical Contest at Alma

Donald Smith a graduate of Alma High School and College freshman won first place in the Prohibition Oratorical contest last Thursday night. He will represent Alma in the state contest on April 6. Four contestants entered. Smith’s clear delivery and skill on stage suggest potential for higher honors.

Biggest Gratiot County Horse Show Held Saturday

A major event in Gratiot County promises a large Saturday horse show with a parade forming at John Shick's feed barn and running along Superior and State streets for about one and a half miles. Exhibitors may receive free stable and feed, plus free dinners at the barn and a nine AM decorating gathering.

Saginaw firm lands contract to repair Superior Street Bridge

At a Friday night city council meeting Continental Bridge Co of Saginaw won a 1250 contract to creosote cover the East Superior Street bridge. Work will begin after steel beams arrive with completion by April 20 and a rebuilt approach including multi layer tar and sand coverings.

Spinney Fire Insurance Adjustments Report Losses

The Spinney Fire Insurance Agency closes the losses adjusted for the January 10 1915 fire totaling 21761 30 with most settlements on January 15 1915. Union Telephone Co is listed with a 3000 00 loss after delay. Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters report combined losses of 1700 00 with 200 00 attributed to the Sisters and the rest to the Knights.

DORN A WRG DIES IN GRIAT COUNTY PROBATE JUDGE

John R. Wright aged eighty five years and twenty three days died at the home of his niece Mrs. Rockwell at Grant and Center streets. He served four years as Judge of Probate in Alger county and later spent much time in Idaho before moving twenty years ago to Gratiot county where he lived with Mrs. Rockwell. A kindly old gentleman with a wide circle of friends, funeral services were held at Mrs. Rockwell's home on Tuesday.

Ithaca Man Dies After Long Illness at 59

John Andrew Todd born August 29 1885 in Columbia County Ohio moved with family to Neston Ohio married Anna Miller then Eliza beth Sell. He died March 11 1916 in Ithaca aged 59 years 6 months 12 days leaving a widow and seven children. Funeral held with Rev R Ly McLain officiating. burial in Ithaca cemetery.

Townsend Ely Back from New Mexico and California Trip

Townsend Ely returned to Alma on March 10 after nearly six months away visiting his son and enjoying warmer climates. He spent four months in Deming and Santa Fe New Mexico and almost two months in Los Angeles California. Ely notes his son Ralph is becoming a prominent New Mexico figure and potential governor with broad support. Ralph serves as receiver for the New Mexico Central railroad and previously directed the Republican Party in the state. Ely formerly held Michigan offices including State Highway Commissioner and two terms as State Senator. He stayed at the Rosalind Hotel in Los Angeles and found hotel rates reasonable, with travel health good and his spirits high on returning home.
