Friday contests at Tabernacle featured eight colleges with student orators delivering speeches. Judges evaluated delivery, rhetoric, and persuasiveness, highlighting steady voices and strong poise across participants from the represented institutions.
Alma prepares for the annual Michigan Intercollegiate contest with afternoon women’s and evening men’s orations in the new Tabernacle. Eight colleges compete for state supremacy, with prizes and a spot at the Interstate Contest. Alma students Mike Duncanson and Maurice Cole lead local hopes.
Dr A Slayter entertained at a Wright House dinner Saturday evening with Dr E A Ward of Saginaw and Drs McGavee and Geo McLaughlin president of the American School of Osteopathy Kirksville Missouri. Slayter is a graduate of that school and old friends added to the reunion.
The Civic League committee will meet in the Reading Room on Monday afternoon March 8 between 1:30 and 5:30 to take orders for shrubs and trees.

Mr. W. A. Weed has resigned after two months as managing editor of the Record and accepted a similar position with the Sharon Advocate in Sharon Massachusetts. He left Alma Saturday and will assume duties on arrival. He impressed locals with his exacting work and left many friends.
Mrs Theodore Marsh longtime Alma resident died at her Portland Oregon home on February 22 after an operation Telegrams to Michigan relatives carried the news Her husband moved the body to Lansing for burial services were held at her sister Mrs Karl Norton’s Ottawa street She had worked in the offices of St Louis Chemical Co and later Home Lumber Fuel Co a leader in local social and civic life The couple had moved to the West about four years ago where Mr Marsh worked in an automobile firm Friends were shocked by the sudden death and lack of prior illness news
Miss Ellen Mowry, living near Clare, remembered for horse thievery and parole, tried to pass a forked check in Clare county. She was jailed in Ithaca and faces court action soon. Sheriff Bradford also reported Harvey Morrow of Perrington charged with assault and battery after an incident involving Mr. Yunker.
Stephen Nishit, a one year varsity guard for the Presbyterian school, was elected captain by this year's five after the team picture was taken on Tuesday afternoon. Though new to varsity, Nishit is considered one of the finest guards the college has produced and will graduate to lead the squad next season.
Charles G. Rhodes and Frank Pollasky hosted an informal stag party at Pollasky's State Street home last Wednesday evening with thirty invited guests. Cards were played until ten, then refreshments, then games resumed until midnight.

Mrs. Francis King gifted the roses and shrubs, turning the area into a charming city spot that pleases both residents and visitors. A nine member party from the city traveled Sunday evening to Chicago where they began a trip to California Monday. Mrs E T Lamb and two sons Woodburn and Gordon plan two to three months visiting her mother in Los Angeles and friends in Spokane. Mrs Sharrar and son Lee proceed to Pasadena to stay with Mr and Mrs Hayt while Mrs Stannard heads toward Seattle.
Frederick L Hammer a 55 year old sausage maker for A P Carle was killed instantly when struck by a Pere Marquette Detroit Mayer locomotive at the Janes Avenue crossing as he fled a potential collision with his employer’s car. Carle and his 16 year old son escaped unhurt. Hammer’s body was taken to Franee's undertaking rooms. He was born in Schleswig-Holstein and lived in Saginaw. survived by his wife and three daughters. The funeral is expected Thursday pending final arrangements.
A Saturday night minstrel and bang concert in the college chapel venue drew a full Wright Opera House audience. The band led by Ray Tomlin performed with Chas Ward James Stouber and Frank Whittington providing instrumental selections. Numerous performers including Chester Robinson Rudolph Bevere Emerald Garlock Linton Melvin Ralph Chisholm Burnell Wight Thomas Blaisdell Bryson Matlest Oscar Andersen John Wax Verne Van Dusen Robert McAllister and Paul Austin entertained with impersonations and solos. Proceeds will pay for band salts recently purchased from a local merchant and another show is planned soon with possible changes.

A large crowd greeted Misa W Hutchinson the impersonator at the Methodist church last Wednesday evening. She presented readings from Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, portraying Rebecca with notable skill and sensitivity, drawing praise from critics and audiences alike for her expressive performance.
Fred Slater a progressive clothing merchant announces a unique sale next week where all city churches will share in daily sales profits. In a packed high gym, Alma and Cadillac met for season finales after a lively first half in which Alma led 12 to 6. The Women’s Club meeting at Mrs. John Caple’s home on South Woodworth avenue last Monday afternoon elected officers: President Mrs. Geo W. Moore, vice president Mrs. Cyrus B Gardner, recording secretary and treasurer Mrs. Charles O. Ward, correspond ing secretary Mrs. Francis King.
