Courship at College Ends in Lake Geneva Wedding

Ira T. Carruthers, athletic instructor at Alma College, wed Miss Winifred Markham of Sault Ste. Marie in a high noon ceremony at St. James Episcopal Church. The couple will honeymoon at Lake Geneva Wisconsin and reside in Galenburg Michigan after August 18 where Carruthers will be Knox College physical director.

Cushing Benedict to Open Store in Alma

Alma merchants Chester Benedict and William Cushing have bought Bert Failing’s stock and will open as Cushing & Benedict about July 1. They plan to sell bazaar goods boots and shoes dry goods crockery and other lines in a store in Alma’s business section. They will spend the interval reorganizing.

Arcada Grange Holds June Regular Session

Arcada Grange met on Saturday night June 25. The lecturer and court ladies presented a program including songs recitations and papers by members Lulu Keefer Bertha Huberl Frankie Kuhlman Florence Wood and others. After the program six girls performed the flower exercise and refreshments followed as the meeting closed in due form.

Fishermen Wright and Hollenbeck bring back fine Houghton Lake catch

John Wright and Virg Hollenbeck returned from a hunting trip to Houghton Lake with two days of fishing at Dr J N Day’s cottage. They produced 60 pounds of pickerel bass and wall eyed pike, sizes from 1.5 to 10 pounds. Dr Daywee notes the lake has over 1000 miles of tributaries and a natural fish population with no planting.

Mrs. Louisa Goodrich, recently back from Fort Wrangle Alaska, stays in Alma with her son J. Tinkham and family. She recalls living in a brick house on the St Louis road years ago, brings curios including black garnets and gold nuggets, notes Alaska climate similar to Michigan, and her son owns 300 acres planning a potato crop this season.

Pere Marquette Announces Rail Wage Increases

After negotiations in Detroit, W De Tramp general superintendent signs an agreement raising wages for several classes of Pere Marquette employees. Effective July 1, increases include freight conductors 70 cents daily and freight brakemen 72 cents daily. Work day reduced to ten hours, mileage two hours per day, and pay over ten hours at time and a half. Passenger conductors and brakemen will receive raises as a schedule is finalized.

Air Route Special Marks Zeppelin Flight Milestone

The article notes Count Zeppelin’s airship carrying 20 passengers from Friedrichshafen to Düsseldorf, a 385 mile trip in about nine hours, cutting railroad time by a third. Regular flights expected with initial fares from 25 to 50 dollars. The 455 by 64 foot craft includes a restaurant and travels over 40 miles per hour.

Miss Henrietta Knapp born July 22 1881 in New York state died at her Alma home Friday July 24 after illness of a few days. She married Geo Willard February 4 1832 and moved to Gratiot county in 1869 living in Alma since. Eight children were born four sons and four daughters with three surviving. Funeral held at home with burial in Riverside family lot.

Alma Citizens Organize for Pitcher Estate Heir Claims

Fifty descendants of Samuel Pitcher met at the Packer home in Toledo to pursue an English estate reportedly worth 72 million dollars. Descendants produced old records proving lineage, with William Pitcher of Bluffton to handle inquiries in England this August. A large list of attendees and officers was announced as the group formed at their second meeting, noted in the Toledo Bee on June 16.

The Riverdale Elevator Co. under W. E. Swope shows rising business, with eight 1000 bushel bins, twenty bean-cleaning machines, and about 40,000 bushels processed at the beanery. The operation includes a feed mill, coal and wood yards, and trades in cement, lime, plaster, tile, shingles, salt, and lumber for local customers.

Alward to Join Republican Congressional Committee in New York

Dennis E. Alward of Clare Michigan long time secretary of Michigan's Republican state central committee and a reading clerk in the state house becomes assistant secretary of the Republican congressional committee. He will head operations at the New York headquarters late July or early August. Michigan lawmakers resisted the transfer due to his valued service but yielded to committee pressure. Alward has served as Michigan secretary for ten years since Gerrit Dickoma became chairman. His broad political knowledge prompted McKinley to assign him to the New York office during the campaign for control of the next House.

The John Ball park parkway treated with calcium chloride shows dustless, damp surface and hard, smooth pavement. Detroit manufactured chemical sponge absorbs moisture quickly and releases it slowly. Obituary for Gertrude E Sipe Richardson

Gertrude Elizabeth Sipe oldest daughter of Orlando and Emma Sipe was born December 23 in Lafayette Township Gratio. She moved with her parents to North Star Township then Alma where she graduated Alma High School and worked at Delevan's store until January 9 1908 when she married Frank Richardson of St. Louis. She died June 48 1010 leaving her husband a one month old daughter a father a brother and a sister. Funeral January 10 at her late home and burial in Riverside Cemetery at Alma beside her mother. Aunt Mrs Burt Robertson of Harie attended.
