Death of Col J A Elwell Former Gratiot Leader

Colonel J A Elwell longtime St Louis and Gratiot county figure died last Tuesday at his daughter's home after a brief illness. Born in Sweden he built influence in New York commerce and politics before moving to St Louis where he aided city growth. Funeral at Dr Wheeler’s home Friday at two with Rev Sayre officiating.

Elwell Pioneer Built Railways and Local Wealth

The article honors Col Elwell of St Lews for founding and expanding the Chicago Saginaw & Canada railroad, leasing and modernizing it after Western investors faltered. Public Waters Rule In Wisconsin Trespass Case

A Merce county judge ruled that streams crossing private land and their fish belong to the public. navigation by boat or on foot is allowed as long as anglers do not set foot on the banks. The decision concludes there is no trespass by following the stream through private property. The Misses May Edith and Martha Forquer visited Mt. Pleasant residents at the Peck home earlier this week.

John Wilk a Gratiot county pioneer died Tuesday June 28 at his son's home after a month illness He was born in 1837 near Berlin Germany emigrated to America at twenty seven He married Mary E Banmaster and settled in Oakland then Gratiot county Funeral was Thursday at two Rev Hahn Owosso and interment at Wright cemetery Pine River township He leaves two sons two daughters twenty two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Ministerial Meeting of Gratiot County Group in St Louis

The Gratiot County Ministerial Association will meet in St Louis on Monday July 11. Alma Fourth of July Parade Draws Ten Thousand

Crowds estimated at about ten thousand filled Alma for a day of celebration after ideal weather. Townsend spoke at Wright port shortly after arrival.

Hundreds enjoyed a park dinner as Mayor N. F. McClinton introduced Mr Townsend who spoke for nearly an hour. The Withington Zouaves drew attention while Pine River Canton drill team impressed spectators. Afternoon events featured street and water sports and fire company demonstrations from Ithaca St Louis and Alma. Fireworks closed the day followed by an illuminated canoe parade on Pine River.

Dodds Welcomed Home by Backing Town Parade

Hon F H Dodds of the Eleventh Congressional district arrived from Washington to a citywide welcome in Mount Pleasant. A band, a gaily decked crowd, and hundreds of citizens accompanied him to the center of town where thousands filled the streets to hear the congressman speak. District Superintendent W P French of the Lansing Methodist district preached at the First Methodist Church last Sunday evening.

Paul Delavan OME Returns Home From South America

Paul Delavan, who left Alma on September 1 1908 and January 1 1909 for San Luis, arrived home Friday July 1 after eighteen months abroad. He traveled from San Luis to Buenos Ayres May 6 aboard the Nile, visiting Montevideo Santos Rio de Janeiro Bahia and Cape Verde Madeira Lisbon Cherbourg and Southampton. He reached Alma June 23 aboard the Adriatic and plans not to return to Ann Arbor for civil engineering studies. He left Carnegie Observatory in South America due to failing eyesight.
