Colonel J A Elwell longtime St Louis and Gratiot county figure died last Tuesday at his daughter's home after a brief illness. Born in Sweden he built influence in New York commerce and politics before moving to St Louis where he aided city growth. Funeral at Dr Wheeler’s home Friday at two with Rev Sayre officiating.

A Merce county judge ruled that streams crossing private land and their fish belong to the public. navigation by boat or on foot is allowed as long as anglers do not set foot on the banks. John Wilk a Gratiot county pioneer died Tuesday June 28 at his son's home after a month illness He was born in 1837 near Berlin Germany emigrated to America at twenty seven He married Mary E Banmaster and settled in Oakland then Gratiot county Funeral was Thursday at two Rev Hahn Owosso and interment at Wright cemetery Pine River township He leaves two sons two daughters twenty two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Paul Delavan OME Returns Home From South America
Paul Delavan, who left Alma on September 1 1908 and January 1 1909 for San Luis, arrived home Friday July 1 after eighteen months abroad. He traveled from San Luis to Buenos Ayres May 6 aboard the Nile, visiting Montevideo Santos Rio de Janeiro Bahia and Cape Verde Madeira Lisbon Cherbourg and Southampton. He reached Alma June 23 aboard the Adriatic and plans not to return to Ann Arbor for civil engineering studies. He left Carnegie Observatory in South America due to failing eyesight.
