Alma Home Guards Ready for State Troop Muster

Alma company of Michigan state troops expects to be mustered soon with uniforms guns and blanks for officers received. First Lieutenant John Chick says six to twelve more men needed to reach full quota. Drills held Tuesday and Friday as George Soper leads with John Chick L. Thompson as lieutenants.

Worden Convicted on Disorderly Charge in Justice Court

Olle Worden was convicted Tuesday in Justice Rogers court of disorderly conduct after a late jury verdict. Attorney James G. Krese defended Worden. Ora L. Smith prosecuted. Worden, arrested on a train home from Merrill, faces sentencing and plans to appeal to circuit court.

Baby Show at Eastminster Chapel under Parents' Club

A baby show for children up to three years old will be held Thursday June 27 at 2 p.m. in Eastminster Chapel on Republic Avenue. Local doctors will judge, a short program by youths is planned, nurses will help, and admission is 6 and 10 cents.

Deserter From Canadian Army Nabbed By Local Police

Chief of Police Vibber arrested Joseph Rehome of Grand Rapids after a tip from Zinman & Police Shows members. Rehome, who had worn a Canadian army uniform, confessed to desertion and was jailed awaiting Canadian army police. He will be sent to the front immediately, avoiding usual British and Canadian army sentences.

Symons Wholesale Grocery to Open Alma Plant

Symons Bros of Saginaw completes a three story brick Alma wholesale plant near the Ann Arbor depot. Tan McQuay will run the Alma operation covering territory along the Ann Arbor and Pere Marquette lines. Two weeks more are needed before active operations begin as goods arrive and minor details are finished. Lieutenant Cyrus J. Gardimer has received a commission.

Alma High School Exercises Open With Baccalaureate Address

Dr SW Dickie of Albion gives the commencement address to Alma class of 1918 graduates. Rev J Frank Jackson’s baccalaureate sermon at the Presbyterian church opened commencement week, urging sacrifice and service to others as graduates prepare to receive diplomas tonight. The speech praised heroic deeds of men from many walks of life and linked current war time courage to moral duty.

Pioneer Dead Mrs Margaret McNamara of Alma County

Mrs Margaret McNamara age nearly 86 died at her Park avenue home Monday at 2 50 a.m. She was an early Gratiot county settler arriving with Aff for Affard Men Isaac Gen from Senate in 1855. Born in Clare Ireland November 12 1890 she came to the United States at seven. In 1855 she married Michael McNamara and came to Michigan. Four surviving children James of Mt Pleasant Cornelia Kate and Henry of Alma. The couple settled in Sumner township in 1885 then built a farm later owned 65 years by the family. Funeral from St Marys Catholic church Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment Riverside Catholic cemetery.

Scouts Meet in St Johns Church Guild Room

Scouts from troop four convened Monday evening in St Johns Church Guild Room with Rev J Frank Jackson and guest Charles Wyant of troop 18. Wyant led knot-tying tests for candidates Franklin Yager Clifford Smith Gorman Smith Everett Giles and others while teaching compass and flag history and overseeing drill and setting up exercises.

Idlehour theatre changes hands Friday night

The Idlehour theatre in Alma will pass from C. A. Miller to the Murphy interests of Detroit with the last show Friday night ending Miller’s lease. A. H. Auhley of Liberty theatre will manage both Alma movie houses and secure new generators to improve picture quality. The new owners plan higher grade films from Paramount Artcraft Goldwyn Pathe and Triangle and deny rumors of cheaper pictures.

Beekeepers Meet in Gratiot County on June 27

The Gratiot County Beekeepers association will hold its second meeting on June 27 1918 at J N Harris outward near St. Louis and Ithaca. Prof Kindig of MA has promised to attend along with other prominent beekeepers. Demonstration meeting with lunch basket picnic and a visit to Harris honey house in St Louis in the afternoon.

A big Fourth of July parade will feature Liberty trucks and cadets and guards marching in Celebration Jay. Local groups including Sam mies are listed among participants for a festive civic celebration.

Murphy In It Undersheriff Petitions Circulated

Arthur J. Murphy, undersheriff and former game warden, sees petitions circulating to enter the Republican sheriff primary on August 2. Friends launched the drive, spreading from the city to countywide, signaling a possible race for the nomination. In Breckenridge Sylvia Muscott wed Clarence H.
