Pleasing recital praise for Mrs McKenzie in Champaign

Alma College field men report strong summer prospects and expect the largest enrollment in the college’s history when September opens. Some draft law worries cause indecision among a few students, but overall turnout is seen as highly favorable. Pattengill Reunion in Alma Friday

Married Soldier Weds in Virginia Today

Miss Marian Spinney of this city married Private Miller A. Larson of the Medical corps at Embarkation hospital Camp Stuart Virginia after traveling to Newport News. The bride, raised in Alma and a local graduate, will live with the groom until his overseas service. she will return to Alma to resume librarianship at the Alma Free Reading Room.

Michigan Draft Calls 244,496 Men in July

Michigan contributes 8,000 of the 244,496 draftees in July under the Crowder call. Sealed Twenty-Ones from Michigan are drawn today by Secretary Baker, with Camp Custer serving as training for those entering the colors. Reclassification of other classes to class one increases draft power as the goal of 3,000,000 under arms nears. The process aims to deplete close one before year end.

Nelson Sandel case ends in no action verdict

The Nelson-Sandel suit in Ithaca circuit court ended with a verdict of no cause for action for George Sandel. Clinton Nelson sued for twenty five thousand dollars over alleged illicit relations with Sandel's wife. The jury ruled little evidence supported the claims and the case remains with high court options. In a separate Gratiot circuit case, John Campbell was found liable for five thousand eight hundred dollars plus costs in a bastardy consent dispute involving Edith Grandy and her tenant's child. Campbell faces jail until payment.

Patriotic Meeting urged for July 8 in Alma schools

County superintendent Fred L Keeler promotes patriotic school meetings across Gra tiot county ahead of the annual school gathering. T A Potter Com of Schools directs districts to organize a district wide rally featuring speakers and music, open with prayer and America, display the flag, and foster local pride and war effort understanding. A meeting is planned in Alma in the city high school auditorium Monday July 8 with a program to be announced soon.

Brennan murder case 19 started at Clinton County court

The second trial arising from the murder of Beatrice Epler began in Clinton County Circuit Court at St Johns Mountay with John P Brennan as defendant. The defense sought a change of venue citing cost and prejudice. Jury selection proceeded with multiple veniremen excused for farm duties. Prosecution and defense retain notable attorneys and expect a verdict before Friday with arguments to follow Saturday.

MASS MEETING FOR WAR SAVINGS IN ALMA HIGH

Pretty Miss Alma Spencer in Detroit Larceny Case

Alma Spencer of Detroit faced grand larceny charges after demonstrations at D. W. Robinson dry goods in this city. She was brought back from Detroit by Undersheriff Art Murphy on a warrant. bail set at 200 was posted. The case was set for examination July 25.

War Savings drive in Alma plans large canvass

City Chairman Murphy forms many committees to canvass Alma homes starting July 1 to sell War Savings stamps for the remainder of the year. County quota is about 407200, with per capita national aim of 201k. Stamps cost 4 per cent interest, redeemable at post offices and banks. a $4.17 purchase yields $5.00 in January 1923. Also reports Carolyn Hughes’s near fatal gas accident and hospital recovery.

Enlisted Men Form Michigan State Troops Company

Officers of Com 87 Michigan State Troops enlisted men at a high school meeting Tuesday evening. Members will take US and Michigan state oaths for three years. The company will have sixty enlisted men and three officers. Equipment is expected within days.
