City council adopts a curfew ordinance banning youths under sixteen from streets after nine pm unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Offenders will be taken home, had names logged in police reports, and may be prosecuted in Probate court. enforcement begins twenty days after passage.
G H Giles senior member of Giles Eckert agency sells his interest in the Eastern Market on Superior street. He becomes sole owner while Bert Eckert retires from the partnership to focus on his western city meat market.
Murphy and Son of Omaha challenge Republic Motor Truck team of this city for a July 4th clash with a possible July 6 date. The Murphy crew, famed as one of the west’s best semi pro outfits, has a storied record and aims to bring top baseball action to Alma, home of Republic trucks. Edith Platt 23 a nurse at Brainerd hospital Vestaburg area died yesterday from an appendectomy operation performed a week earlier. She had been ready to serve with the Red Cross and was taken ill at home, death occurring at 8:00 am. Funeral services set for Saturday at 12.40 pm at her parents home with Rev. Duffey officiating.
The thirty second annual convention of the Gratiot County Sunday School Association will be held at Riverdale August 17 18 in a large tent. Notable speakers include Rev C A Wright Er Mohr and Fred Washburn with Dr G H Lau expected to lead a large chorus. Dollar Club members urged to pay annual dues to cover costs and avoid extra notices.

Curtis Somerville nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Somerville of this city died from burns received when flames burst from an open furnace door while he started a fire in the basement on East Superior Street. He passed away at 4:00 a.m. Tuesday after enduring severe burns all night. The body was taken to Mt. Pleasant for burial beside the Somerville children.
Gratiot County faces a high battle to meet a 497200 War Savings and Thrift Stamps quota set by the state committee as statewide sales lag. Efforts concentrate on Alma and county towns with stamps sold at banks post offices depots and many stores. Stamps offer interest and conversion into War Savings after purchasing sixteen. prices noted 417 until July 1 for War Savings and 260 for Thrift.
Following a Tuesday motion the Alma city council approved constructing a new fire station with a cost not to exceed 10 090 dollars. Work on excavation is planned to begin within one or two weeks, with contractors expected to start soon.

Twenty clubs formed for home gardening and canning involving about 200 children aged ten to sixteen. Leaders include Alma youths as advisers. Alma High School will hold commencement to graduate thirty six seniors next Thursday. Principal announces ceremony details and expects a crowd from the community and families.
The 30th annual commencement at Alma High School kicks off with Rev. J. Frank Jackson delivering the baccalaureate address at the Presbyterian church. Doctors, teachers, and graduates will follow through a week of plays, diplomas, and the ceremony on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. with Dr. Samuel Dickie of Albion College delivering the commencement address to 36 graduates.
