Mendelssohn’s Elijah oratorio sang Tuesday evening at the Alma Presbyterian church by the Alwa Choral Club and College orchestra with soloists from Chicago. The performance traced Elijah’s life from Baal’s challenge to his ascent in a fiery chariot, aided by the capable voices of Wengerd Craven McGreaham and Fuller, and supported by a blended ensemble from multiple cities. Ray Baylis, secretary, urges parents to send sons to a YMCA supervised camp at Crystal Lake in June to provide wholesome, profitable leisure. He warns against aimless freedom and stresses strong leadership and discipline to prevent mischief during summer break.

Gratiot county marked graduation with 175 of 205 graduates present at Alma High School auditorium. About 450 attendees heard Attorney D L Johnson and Rev J Frank Jackson speak. diplomas were handed by County Commissioner H Potter. Also noted were local teacher movements and obituaries for Mrs A F McMullin and Bessie B Fowler.
The Alma Common Council met in regular session June 17 1913 with Mayor J M Montigel presiding. Aldermen present were Rowland Peery Caple Kehn and Fraker. journal read and approved. Treasurer’s report reviewed and ordered filed. several street, drainage, water pressure, and cemetery fund items authorized. list of bills approved and clerk instructed to issue payments. meeting adjourned.

The high school events begin Sunday with the baccalaureate, followed by a Monday performance of Twelfth Night, Tuesday through Friday feature various ceremonies culminating in the graduation of twenty nine seniors.
Miss Theo Amsbury opened the college commencement program Saturday evening with a recital drawn from Greig Tschaikowsky Brahms and Liszt. Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No 12 gained special praise as well rendered. Amsbury a School of Music graduate earned her post graduate diploma today. Mr G Warner aided with readings from Nelson Page A Soldier of the Empire and Gilbert Parker John Bigot s Repentance. encores drew warm audience appreciation.
Adelbert E Barstow born October 2 1846 in Madison County New York later moved to Michigan and Ithaca. He married Kerine Barton and had four children Lottie Mattie Will E and Nellie. A hunter known across the state he kept a trophies filled den worth thousands. He died June 14 after illness at home aged 66 years eight months eleven days. He leaves wife three children three sisters and three brothers. Funeral June 17 at Presbyterian church with Masonic rites and local honors.
The last resting place of Mr Barstow was marked by interment at North Star cemetery. Florals conveyed sympathy for the bereaved as Masons Firemen and others furnished impressive tributes. Numerous out of town relatives attended including Porter Hall of Kent Ohio Nellie Mergen Colorado Springs and several couples from Carson City and Milwaukee.
Mr and Mrs Spearan left Saturday for a Constitutional trip to Grand Rapids. Mr and Mrs Janes Thaw visited in Rapids, Me, and Mrs Montague went to Detroit last Wednesday with Mr Montague returning Thursday. Mrs Jessie Phillips left for Detroit Saturday. Mr Robert A Miller of Charlevoix and Mrs L Robinson of Detroit joined last week as new members. Mrs Ward the nurse spent last week in Lansing. Mr and Mrs Geo Gulick vacationing with friends in Van Wert Dayton and Springfield Ohio. Miss Luella Chadsey left Tuesday for a fortnight’s vacation with parents in Thompsonville.
The High School Debating Club held its tenth annual banquet Friday night at the school. Alumni attended along with current members and friends. Toastmaster Edward Titus, class of 1905, introduced guests and speakers including Paul Cash, 1913, on Our Guests, and John Ludwick, 1912. The program featured Lambda Sigma by Bernice Sweet, Origin of the Debating Club by Verne Johnson, Future of the Debating Club by Robert Notestein, Reminiscences by Floyd Smith, and Our High School by Harold B. Ward.
Harold Miller and Anna Fralick wed in Flint on Tuesday after obtaining a license in Ithaca. The couple, with Miller in the family grocery business and Fralick a recent Alma college diploma recipient, boarded the southbound Ann Arbor train and were married at the bride's parents home in the afternoon.
A July program at Cele Gety Park showcases four flights and an aviator ascent never before seen in the region. The event features sunmillo lane contending with Vortts and Wright Wevult of Chicago for four nights of sport and music. Mayor Reve Mason to speak at 1000 in the park as fireworks and hand concerts cap the evening. Citizens within 60 miles urged to attend.
Letters awarded to Alma College athletes at a chapel gathering for the 1912 1 season. Basketball letter recipients include Captain Von Thurn Hoopier Schultz Phillips Misenar Austin and Goodrich. Baseball letters go to Captain Vogt Brilmeyer McCloy Peacock Yerex Rogers Simonton Myers Goodrich Phillips and Wood. Track letters awarded to Captain Hyde Edgerton Misenar H Jackson M Jackson Chisholm Cook Johnson H Schultz Anderson and Wilson after Albion meet, with banners and medals for track and football also presented.
The High School Alumni association has organized an annual banquet in the commercial room of the new high school building next Thursday evening. Tickets are seventy five cents and can be bought at the bank or Rhodes drug store. Speakers include Ezra Smith and Supt. Ellsworth. Toasts will be brief, with a five dollar fine for speeches over two hours.
The two adult Bible classes of the M. E. church enjoyed a pleasant social evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Crist west of the city on a Wednesday in June. Attendees included M. J. McFee, T. J. Clark, Fred Roland, and C. M. Putnam who arrived with a bumper load on a sugar beet rack. A basket lunch and hot coffee were served. the event fostered discussion on class needs and opportunities and hopes for future gatherings.
